NORMAN, Okla. -- Garrett Buechele hit his fifth home run of the season and right-hander Bobby Shore earned his first win as the No. 4 Sooners defeated Oakland University 12-6 Saturday at L. Dale Mitchell Park.
Shore took a 3-1 lead into the fifth inning but ran into some trouble as the Sooners (8-0) fell behind 4-3. However, OU quickly countered in the bottom of the fifth with six runs off a trio of bunt singles and a pair of two-run doubles by Tyler Ogle and Cameron Seitzer.
That allowed Shore to settle down against the Grizzlies (0-2) after tossing 30-plus pitches in the decisive fifth frame. The right-hander battled back with a combined 20 pitches in the sixth and seventh innings to retire six straight batters. He finished with four hits and three walks scattered across seven innings and five strikeouts.
"He was a warrior and fought on the mound today," said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. "I was proud of the way of the way Bobby stayed in there and fought. Even though we were behind in the fifth inning when he left the mound, he's a veteran guy, so he should be able to respond and know that we are going to score some runs. I was proud offensively in how we answered back, even if we hadn't, we would have stayed with Bobby ."
Oakland starter Aaron Wick (0-1) lasted 4 1/3 innings and was responsible for nine runs off 12 hits.
The Sooners wasted little time in taking the game's initial lead as Max White doubled to lead off the afternoon and later scored on a pair of singles by Erik Ross and Garrett Buechele.
Oakland battled back to tie the game with a run in the second inning on Nolan Jacoby's RBI triple.
"In the third inning, we ran into a little bit of a bump in the road, misplayed a ball and they were able to capitalize," said Golloway. "You have to give them credit. They came up with a hit when they needed a hit."
Tied at one run apiece after two innings of play, OU took back the lead in the bottom of the third on Buechele's fifth home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field. The preseason All-American entered the game tied with Nebraska, which ranked second in the Big 12 Conference among all teams with four home runs.
After eight games, the Sooners lead the league in nearly every offensive category and have 12 homers on the season. OU finished Saturday with its fifth game of scoring at least 10 runs and sixth straight contest with double-digit hits.
Buechele had three of the Sooners 17 hits, while Ross had a career-high four hits, including two bunt singles and two stolen bases. Ogle, Seitzer, White and Jack Mayfield also had multi-hit performances with two hits apiece.
Freshman Cayle Shambaugh made his third appearance and relieved Shore in the eighth inning with the Sooners up 10-4. Shambaugh finished up the final 2 2/3 innings with one run allowed of three hits.
The Sooners will complete the three-game series with Oakland Sunday at 1 p.m. Oklahoma will send Burch Smith (0-0) to the mound against left-hander Hayden Fox (0-0) for the Golden Grizzlies.
Oklahoma will celebrate "Hoops and Hardball" on Sunday. Fans that present their OU women's basketball ticket vs. Baylor at L. Dale Mitchell Park will receive $4 admission.
The game can be heard on the Sooners' flagship station, KREF 1400 AM, with Chuck Kelly and Ross Hubbard calling the action. The pregame show gets underway at 12:30 p.m.
