Buechele Named Big 12 Player of the Week

NORMAN, Okla. -- Junior third baseman Garrett Buechele's hot start to the 2011 season did not go unnoticed as he was named the Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference's Player of the Week on Feb. 21.

It marks the second career honor for Buechele, who started the 2011 season with a home run in each of the first three games and multiple hit performances in all four contests over the weekend.

Buechele batted .625 (10-for-16) and slugged 1.188 with three homers, five RBIs and four runs scored. The captain also walked twice and was hit by a pitch on two occasions against William and Mary.

In the season opener, Buechele singled in his first at-bat and homered in his second to finish 2-for-4 with two RBIs. The Arlington, Texas, native also homered in last year's season opener at San Diego State.

On Saturday, he finished the doubleheader with four hits (two homers) and three RBIs. In Sunday's series finale, Buechele had a season-high four base knocks.

The All-American leads OU and the Big 12 with 10 hits and three home runs. He also ranks in the top three in the league in batting average, slugging percentage and on-base percentage (.700).

Taylor Jungmann (Texas) and Kelby Tomlinson (Texas Tech) were named the conference's pitcher and newcomer of the week, respectively.

The Sooners are back in action this Tuesday against Arkansas- Pine Bluff in Norman, the first of a two-game series against the Lions. First pitch will be at 3 p.m. and the game can be heard live on SoonerSports.com. The two will conclude the midweek series on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
