NORMAN, Okla. – Oklahoma golfer Taylor Schmidt has become familiar with the hardships of injury. The sophomore is in the process of recovering from surgery on her left knee and is making daily progress in her rehab sessions in hopes of returning to the OU lineup sometime this spring.

Schmidt originally tore her anterior cruciate ligament two-and-a-half years ago and re-injured her knee during a team workout in November. After consulting with the team doctor, it was determined that reconstructive surgery was necessary. Since her operation, the Kincardine, Ontario, product has worked tirelessly with OU's athletic training staff in physical rehabilitation to regain strength in her knee.

“It takes six months of rehab for me to get cleared,” said Schmidt. “I think I'm at about three-and-a-half months right now. I go to training twice a day. It's going well; I think I'm on track.”

The sophomore participated in all four of OU's fall tournaments, averaging 75.7 strokes per round. In the Sooners' final fall event, Schmidt finished in a career-best third place at the Dale McNamara Invitational with a career-low 54-hole score of 218 (+2).

Coming off of such a strong fall season, Schmidt is itching to get back out on the course.

“I'm so excited to play healthy golf,” said Schmidt. “I haven't played with a healthy knee in two-and-a-half years. I'm excited to get back out there and start hitting balls on the range with my teammates.”

OU head coach Veronique Drouin will oversee Schmidt's development on the range and practice green.

“What happened to Taylor was unfortunate,” said Drouin. “She's been allowed to chip and putt and I expect her to start hitting full shots soon and be competing for a spot in the lineup toward the end of our spring season.”

The Sooners competed this past week at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande, P.R., where they finished in ninth place after firing a three-round score of 920 (+56).

“I'm so proud of them,” said Schmidt. “They're doing well. I wish them all the best and I'll continue keep on supporting them.”

The Sooners next take to the course March 7-9 at the UNLV Rebel Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev.
