Baseball Hosts Meet the Sooners

NORMAN, Okla. -- An estimated crowd of 350 fans were on hand as the OU baseball team took the field for practice on Wednesday night to celebrate the start of the 2011 season at "Meet the Sooners."
Sooner fans of all ages toured the program's facility and watched OU take batting practice on the field while enjoying free food and drink from Chick-fil-a, Frito-Lay and Coca-Cola. Fans received a behind-the-scenes walk through of L.Dale Mitchell Park, including the OU clubhouse, indoor practice facility, dugout and pressbox. Oklahoma held a similar event last season in advance to hosting the 2010 NCAA Norman Regional.
Fans will also have the first opportunity to see the new chair back seats that are currently being installed at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The traditional green colored chairs are being installed throughout the lower bowl of the stadium, adding almost 200 additional chair back seats.
"We started this event last season before the regional and it was something that everyone enjoyed," said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. "Tonight was a special evening. I think everyone is ready for the 2011 season to get started. We want to thank everyone that helped us put it together, and to all the fans for coming out. We hope to see them back this weekend and throughout the season."
OU opens the campaign against William and Mary on Feb. 18 at 3 p.m. at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The two return to action on Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at noon (second game at 3 p.m.). Sunday's series finale is slated for an 11:30 a.m. first pitch.
For the season opener, fans will receive 2011 schedule cards and posters and, in addition, the first 100 fans will receive an OU thermal mug filled with Coca-Cola on Feb. 18 and 19.
Feb. 19 marks the first "Hoops & Hardball" promotion. Fans can present their ticket stub from an OU women's basketball game versus Texas for $4 admission at the gate. "Hoops & Hardball" will also be honored at the Feb. 26 game vs. Oakland (MBB ticket vs. KU) and Feb. 27 game vs. Oakland (WBB ticket vs. BU).
On Tuesday, the Sooners were tabbed the Big 12 preseason No. 1 for the first time since 1995. OU (78 points) received six of the possible 10 first-place votes while defending Big 12 regular season champion Texas earned the remaining four tallies and 76 points overall. Texas A&M, the 2010 league postseason winner, and Baylor are third and fourth, respectively, followed by Kansas State, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech. Nebraska and Kansas check in at No. 8 and 9, and Missouri fills the final spot.
In 2010, the Sooners made their 10th College World Series appearance and first trip to Omaha since 1995. It marks the first time since 1995 that OU was selected as the top pick in the preseason poll.
Oklahoma returns seven position starters and two weekend starting pitchers from last year's College World Series team that won 50 games for the fi fth time in program history. Included in that bunch is 2010 All-American Garrett Buechele at third base, 2010 Freshman All-American Max White at second base and 2009 All-American Ryan Duke (closer). OU welcomes back all but 14 of the 105 home runs hit last year and 32 of the 50 wins registered by the pitching staff.
