NORMAN, Okla. – The Oklahoma women's golf team fired a third-round score of 306 (+18) Tuesday to finish in ninth place at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic with a 54-hole total of 920 (+56). The Sooners finished ahead of two top-25 opponents in the 18-team event held at the River Course at the Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Grande, P.R.
“We obviously didn't finish as well as we had hoped,” said OU head coach Veronique Drouin. “We still have a full spring season ahead of us with many opportunities. We have a very special group of girls that have amazing potential and this tournament helped show us what we need to work on to reach it. We're now focusing on the Vegas tournament in March.”
No. 1 Alabama took home the title with a three-round 875 (+11), five strokes ahead of second-place Iowa State. The Cyclones finished the highest of OU's three Big 12 opponents in the event. Texas Tech finished in 15th and Oklahoma State tied for 17th.
Alabama's Stephanie Meadow finished at the top of the 98-person field with a 54-hole score of 212 (-4). Florida State's Maria Salinas (-3) finished in second and Georgia's Marta Silva Zamora (-2) took third. The trio represented the only individuals to record an under-par total.
The Sooners were led in Tuesday's round by freshmen Emily Collins and Anne-Catherine Tanguay, who each shot a 4-over 76. Collins finished in a tie for 47th place with a 234 (+18) total and Tanguay tied for 67th with a 237 (+21).
Freshman Chirapat “Ja” Jao-Javanil, junior Brooke Collins, and senior Ellen Mueller all shot a 77 (+5) in the final round. Jao-Javanil's three-round total of 224 (+8) placed her in a tie for 13th place, her fourth top-15 finish of the season. The Thailand native has yet to finish outside of the top 15 in her collegiate career.
