Women's Golf Tied for Ninth After 18 in Puerto Rico

RIO GRANDE, P.R. -- The Oklahoma women's golf team shot a first-round score of 308 (+20) Sunday at the 18-team Lady Puerto Rico Classic to finish the day in a tie for ninth place. Sunday's round, the first of three in the event, was OU's first since late October.
"We got off to a slow start. It seemed like the girls were nervous," said OU head coach Veronique Drouin. "We made some silly mistakes around the greens. We'll be making some adjustments and be ready to go tomorrow."
No. 1 Alabama leads after shooting a 286 (-2). The Sooners trail second-place Purdue (ranked No. 6) and Iowa State by only eight strokes. The tournament, which is being held at the River Course at the Rio Mar Beach Resort in Rio Grande, P.R., features six top-25 teams.
"There's still plenty of golf left," said Drouin. "This is a very competitive field and anything can happen in the next two days. We still have a long ways to go."
The Sooners were led by freshman Chirapat "Ja" Jao-Javanil, who shot a 1-over 73. The Thailand native is tied for seventh place and trails frontrunner Camilla Lennarth of Alabama by three strokes.

Junior Brooke Collins and freshman Anne-Catherine Tanguay are tied for 42nd place after shooting a 78 (+6). Both golfers carded three birdies in their first spring outing of the year.
Senior Ellen Mueller and freshman Emily Collins each shot a 79 (+7) to stand in a tie for 55th place in a field of 98 competitors.
Monday's second round will begin at 6 a.m. CT with a shotgun start. OU will be paired with golfers from Texas Tech, Georgia and North Carolina State. Live stats are available at Golfstat.com.
