NORMAN, Okla. – Sooner fans will have their first opportunity to see the No. 1 ranked University of Oklahoma men's gymnastics team this Saturday in the team's Red/White intrasquad scrimmage.
The Sooner gymnasts will start at 1 p.m. at the team's training facility, the Sam Viersen Gymnastics Center (325 W. Imhoff Road). The scrimmage is free to the public and parking is available across the street at the Lloyd Noble Center.
"We're excited to kick off our season with the Red/White intrasquad on Saturday,” said OU Head Coach Mark Williams. “It should be a good test for the guys going in front of judges for the first time."
The eight-time national champion Sooners recently received the No. 1 ranking in the GymnInfo Preseason Coaches' Poll. Oklahoma secured the top ranking with five first place votes.
OU has been awarded the No. 1 preseason ranking five previous times under Williams. In four of those seasons, OU went on to win the NCAA title (2001, 2002, 2005, 2006).
The 2012 Sooners will be led by junior Jake Dalton, the 2011 NCAA National Champion on floor and vault. In addition to taking the two collegiate titles, Dalton won the title in both events at the 2011 Visa Championships, the national championships of USA Gymnastics. Dalton represented the United States at the 2011 World Championships in Tokyo, Japan, this past October, helping the Americans claim third place and a spot in the 2012 Olympic Games.
The Sooners return seven letterwinners overall, including All-American Troy Nitzky.
Oklahoma, the 2011 NCAA runner-up, will enter the 2012 season coming off of its 11th-straight top-three finish at the NCAA Championships. The Sooners' regular season kicks off in Colorado Springs, Colo., at the Rocky Mountain Open on Jan. 14.
