FLUSHING, N.Y. – Costin Paval earned a second round victory at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships inside the USTA-Billie Jean National Tennis Center, but fell to the top-seed in the quarterfinal on Friday, Nov. 4.
Despite dropping his first set, 6-3, Paval opened play with a win over Fresno State's 47th-ranked Remi Boutillier in second round action. Paval took the second set, 6-4, and finished off the Bulldog with a, 7-5, win in the final set.
Paval, ranked No. 17 nationally, was faced with the task of taking on the No. 1 seed in Virginia's Mitchell Frank in the quarterfinals. In that match, the Sooner from Romania fell to nation's No. 1 newcomer, 6-0, 6-2.
Tsvetan Mihov, who was eliminated from main draw action on Thursday, dropped a straight-set match to Georgia's Sadio Doumbia, ranked No. 24, in the consolation bracket.
