Alexander a Finalist for Hendricks Award

NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma defensive end Frank Alexander has been named a finalist for the 2011 Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year Award the Ted Hendricks Foundation announced Wednesday. The senior from Baton Rouge, La., leads the Big 12 with 8.5 sacks and 18 tackles for loss and is one of six finalists for the award.

Alexander is the second Sooner to be named an award finalist in 2011. Ryan Broyles is one of three finalists for the Biletnikoff Award presented to the nation's top receiver.

Alexander has a total of 51 tackles this season along with six pass break-ups, three forced fumbles, seven quarterback hurries, one interception returned for 27 yards and one fumble recovery. Alexander has been credited with at least a half sack in seven of Oklahoma's 11 games this year and has 14.5 tackles for loss in his last seven games.

Alexander's breakout game this season came against Texas when he finished with six tackles, three sacks for -26 yards four tackles for loss that accounted for 30 yards, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and a pass break-up.

The senior currently ranks sixth on OU's career sacks chart with 20.5 career sacks and eighth on the career tackles for loss chart with 43.

Other finalists for the award include Clemson's Andre Branch, Marshall's Vinny Curry, Illinois' Whitney Mercilus, LSU's Sam Montgomery and USC's Nick Perry.

The final vote for 2011 Hendricks Award conclude Dec. 6 and the winner will be announced Dec. 7. This year's winner will be honored at the Ted Hendricks Award Dinner in the spring of 2012 in Miami, Fla.
