TULSA, Okla. - Oklahoma men's tennis players went a perfect 8-0 on Thursday, the first day of main draw competition, at the ITA All-American Championships, hosted by the University of Tulsa.
"Everyone has worked really hard and it's paying off," John Roddick said. "I am really proud of the intensity and high-level of tennis they are playing at."
OU's three singles competitors - Costin Paval, Guillermo Alcorta and Peerakit Siributwong - each went 2-0 on Thursday and Roddick's three remaining competitors are the most of any school left. Virginia and Illinois each have two singles remaining out of 16 left in play in main draw action.
Paval, ranked No. 17, began the day topping Georgia Tech's Juan Spir and finished the day by upsetting the nation's fourth-ranked player in Henrique Cunha of Duke.
The No. 7 newcomer nationally, Alcorta, downed Florida's Nassim Slilam in straight-sets and defeated Nebraska's Christopher Aumueller in second-round action.
Last year's Big 12 Freshman of the Year, Siributwong, routed Pepperdine's Mousheg Hovhannisyan in the first round and followed that by ousting Baylor's Roberto Maytin, both in straight sets.
Both Oklahoma tandems excelled in the doubles main draw as Paval and Dane Webb out performed North Carolina's No. 6-seed Brennan Boyajian and Jose Hernandez, 8-5.
Siributwong teamed with Tsvetan Mihov to pull of the second upset of the day for the Sooners, this time over UCLA's Alex Brigham and Adrien Puget, 9-7.
OU's two remaining duos ties Tulsa and Nebraska for tops remaining amongst the talented field.
Friday will open with singles quarterfinal action at 9 a.m.
