TOKYO – The University of Oklahoma gymnasts competing for Team USA concluded their time at the 2011 World Championships in Tokyo, Japan, with strong performances in individual event finals. OU letterwinners Steven Legendre and Jonathan Horton posted top eight finishes on the floor exercise and still rings, respectively, while junior Jake Dalton also finished in the top eight on floor.
Dalton, who had originally not qualified for the event final, was added on the day of competition to replace Romania's Marian Dragulescu. The OU junior posted a 15.133 and took eighth place in the event.
Legendre, a three-time finalist on floor at the World Championships, followed his Sooner teammate and recorded his best finish on the event with a 15.400, good for fifth place. Kohei Uchimura of Japan took the title with a 15.633, just .233 points higher than Legendre. Only .500 points separated first and eighth place.
The United States was the only country to have multiple gymnasts represented in the floor final, with both of Americans coming from the University of Oklahoma program.
“I'm really proud of our guys,” said OU Head Coach Mark Williams. “The USA was the only country with two floor finalists. For Steve and Jake to both represent the University of Oklahoma makes it even more amazing. I'm proud of their performances but a little disappointed that Steve wasn't awarded a medal.”
Horton, a 2008 Olympian, posted a 14.300 and placed seventh in the rings portion of the individual finals. China's Chen Yibing, the three-time World Champion on the event, picked up his fourth World title with a 15.800.
The United States had an impressive showing this past week at the 2011 World Championships, taking third place in the team finals earlier this week.
On top of Dalton, Horton and Legendre, the Sooners were also represented in the United States' six-man World Championship lineup by junior Alex Naddour. In addition, OU letterwinner Chris Brooks was the team's one alternate.
The United States' bronze medal showing guaranteed it a berth in the team portion of the 2012 Olympic Games in London. It also marked the first time in eight years and fourth time overall that the U.S. squad won a team medal at the World Championships. The USA's previous team medals came in 1979 (bronze), 2001 (silver) and 2003 (silver).
Gymnasts will compete for spots on the Olympic Team at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in San Jose, Calif., June 28-July 1.
NBC Sports will televise World Championship highlights from the men's competition during its broadcast of the women's all-around final at 1 p.m. on Oct. 16.
