IRVING, Texas – OU women's gymnastics freshman Madison Mooring was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week for Jan. 25, announced by the conference Tuesday.
Mooring scored a career-high 9.95 on beam against TWU on Sunday, becoming the first gymnast in the NCAA this season to reach the 9.95 mark on the event. The score was also a season-best for any Sooner on any event.
In OU's two meets last weekend, Mooring competed on six events for the Sooners and set new career-records in five of those six routines.
Mooring took home the beam title at TWU with her 9.95, and also shared the vault title with teammate Sara Stone with a career-high 9.85.
During OU's quad meet last Friday Mooring scored a 9.775 in all three of her routines (vault, beam and floor), to help the Sooners finish first against No. 6 Oregon State, No. 23 Denver and Centenary.
Mooring has competed on three events in all four of OU's meets this season after joining the team just one month ago following her December high school graduation.
Mooring joins Kayla Nowak, Taylor Spears and Sara Stone in weekly conference honors this season for the Sooners. Nowak and Spears were named Big 12 Event Specialist of the Week and Newcomer of the Week for Jan. 18, while Stone was Event Specialist of the Week on Jan. 11.
Mooring and the rest of the Sooners travel to Seattle, Wash., this weekend for a dual meet with Washington on Friday, Jan. 28 at 9 p.m. (CT).
