Oklahoma Head Coach Sherri Coale
On the game:
“A win is a win, no points were pretty. I'm proud of the guys for the way they gutted it out, they made some big plays down the stretch. Danielle (Robinson) was really good in the second half. We survived. We survived not making a three, we survived shooting poorly from the free-throw line, we survived shooting 30-percent from the field and we missed a lot of rebounds. So to survive all that and win you say, 'thank you,' and run.”
On if the familiarity with K-State head coach Deb Patterson was a factor in the play:
“I just think it's different every year, it depends on personnel. We were intent on take the 3 out for them and they were intent on taking it out for us. Both teams had to play in an uncharacteristic style and I think that's why the ugly battle, the defensive strategies made both of us go away from what we were wanting to do. They did a great job, had a great game plan and their kids fought really hard.”
On the play of Jelena Cerina early in the second half:
“Her making the initial lay-up (of the second half) was huge -- just knowing we could throw it into the block and score. She did a good job of setting screens for Danielle and all she needs is space to operate and she can get to the rim regardless and Jelena created that. Hated that she got some quick fouls, I think she could have been even more instrumental, but that will come with patience and experience.”
On Joanna McFarland playing well in crucial moments of the game:
“She had a huge impact on the game and on the offense. She can do that and she will continue to do that. She's been in her own way a little bit and maybe that shoved some of those obstacles out of the way for her. She's a very good player when she doesn't think too much. She's so smart sometimes she thinks herself into a hole. But she cut loose there and that's the competitor in her and that's over-riding the intellectual maybe, just finding a way to win this game.”
On scoring few perimeter shots:
“No, I can't fathom this team playing 40 minutes and not making a 3. I mean I can't, it's just bizarre to me. I don't think it will happen very often, maybe once, maybe we're done with it. I hope so. But we had point-blank lay-ups and they're switching all those screens so you've got to go take lay-ups and you take what they give you and we couldn't make a lay-up. It's good for us to find another way to play, another way to score and another way to win. We're going to be better because of this. That's what I like about this team.”
On the play of Danielle Robinson:
“She just is the type of player that can take over a game because she can create so many things. Whether it's creating a shot for herself, for a post guy, or a three from the perimeter. She just makes things happen and the thing that she changed tonight was the defensive intensity that got us easy baskets. When you're struggling shooting from the field you need easy baskets and she got us easy baskets.”
Oklahoma Redshirt Sophomore Guard Whitney Hand
On Danielle Robinson's energy:
“I think that we had to have some kind of energy in the second half and Danielle (Robinson) provided that for us. We turned our defense into our offense and I think we have to do that more when we're struggling in the field. I feel like she did a great job with that.”
On Joanna McFarland's impact:
“She's been battling herself for a couple games and she just needed a game like this to get it out and to tough it out and a couple of bad turnovers just didn't go her way and I thought she battled through it really well. I think you're going to see her perform better because of it.”
On the 3-point game:
“They [Kansas State] were switching everything. I felt like our guards were—we talked about it a little bit—we were real sped up. Whenever we caught it we were like 'Oh, we're supposed to shoot three's' so we'd jack it up and it was just bad shot selection which would turn into just a bad possession. You can't ever get into a rhythm.”
Oklahoma Senior Guard Danielle Robinson
On overcoming offensive issues:
“I think we just turned our defense into our offense and we got a lot of deflections and we got a lot of shot clock violations and that was good for us to gain some momentum, and that's what we needed to take a win.”
On the 3-point game:
“I think we were just stagnant offensively in the first half. We weren't penetrating in order to be able to decide if they were going to help or not or get to the rim. I think it was just us being passive on offense in the beginning and not creating for each other.”
Kansas State Head Coach Deb Patterson
On the game:
“It was a classic, hard-fought Big 12 basketball game between two teams that I thought from our perspective had to battle for every possession in the game. The way it should be in Big 12 basketball play. We are disappointed to come out on the losing end of this one, but it is certainly a game that we will learn a great deal from. I'm proud of our basketball team and their effort.”
On the low-scoring game:
“I think our team has demonstrated through the course of the year a really solid commitment to being a high-quality defensive team. Today I think we stayed consistent to that personality. I'm very proud of just how hard we're working as a team on the defensive end of the floor and the commitment not just from those first five but all of the people that are taking the floor off of the bench. I'm really proud of the defensive effort tonight.”
Kansas State Sophomore Guard Brittany Chambers
On the low-scoring game:
“I just think there were two great defensive teams. We played hard on both ends and I think that it was just a battle. It was more of a defensive game for sure.”
Kansas State Sophomore Guard Mariah White
On the second-half of the game:
“They came out and played hard defensively and we played hard defensively. It was a defensive game. They started playing my teammates tighter which was opening things for me so I saw the open lane and I had the chance to go to the goal. I took the chance.”
