Sooners Take Second in Susie Maxwell Berning Classic

NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma women's golf team shot a final round score of 301 (+13) Sunday to finish in second place at the 32nd Susie Maxwell Berning Classic at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman. Arkansas, which entered the day five shots behind the Sooners, won by five strokes.
Oklahoma's 54-hole score of 876 was the best total score by a Sooner team in the Susie Maxwell's history.
“We had some unbelievably great shots on our front nine, but we couldn't get the putts to fall in the end,” said OU head coach Veronique Drouin. “Congratulations to Arkansas; they played unbelievable today in these tough conditions.”
After two mildly calm days on the course, the Oklahoma wind began to pick up in Sunday's final round, a condition most of the younger Sooners weren't accustomed too.
“Today the conditions were completely different than what we are used to playing in,” explained Drouin. “We normally see a north wind like we hadtoday only in the spring. The older girls knew how to play it, but the freshmen, who have only been in Norman for about a month now, had never seen it before.”

The individual leader board featured four Sooners in the top 10.
Freshman Anne-Catherine Tanguay shot a one-over 73 and finished the tournament in third place with a three-round score of 214 (-2). The Quebec City native finished three strokes behind medalist Emily Tubert of Arkansas.
Finishing one stroke behind Tanguay was freshman Emily Collins, who despite shooting a third-round score of 79 (+7), claimed fourth with a 219 (+3) total.
Freshman Chirapat Jao-Javanil tied for eighth with a 54-hole score of 221 (+5) and senior Ellen Mueller (223) finished in 10th. It was Mueller's 11th career top-10 finish.
Sophomore Taylor Schmidt (234) contributed to the Sooners' third-round total with an 18-hole score of 78 (+6). The sophomore finished in a tie for 28th out of 48 competitors.
Competing at an individual level for the Sooners were freshman Mariah Montoya (tied for 31st at 236), senior Sara Hemingway (36th at 239) and junior Brooke Collins (37th at 240).
The Sooners' performance in the Susie Maxwell was powered by their three starting freshmen, who are among the first group of OU golfers recruited by Drouin. The three newcomers each finished in the field's top eight and all had at least one round below par.
In last year's Big 12 Championship, played at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club, the Sooners finished in 11th place after firing a 929 (+65). Five months later, the Sooners bettered their score on the same course by 53 strokes.
Despite the vast improvement, Drouin knows her squad can perform at an even higher level.
“We're going to keep practicing and our heads held high,” she said. “We'll get there. We know what we need to work on and will use this week to prepare for next week in Missouri.”
OU has finished in the top three of back-to-back tournaments after claiming third place in the Cougar Classic two weeks ago.
The Sooners head to Columbia, Mo., Oct. 4-5 for the Johnie Imes Invitational, hosted by the University of Missouri at the Club at Old Hawthorne, the site of next spring's Big 12 Championship.
