NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma women's golf team shot an even-par 288 Saturday in the second round of the 32nd Susie Maxwell Berning Classic to build on its first-place lead at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman. The Sooners' two-round score of 575 places them five strokes ahead of second-place Arkansas (580) and 16 shots in front of third-place Mississippi.

“The girls finished very solid considering they started off pretty rough,” said OU head coach Veronique Drouin. “We struggled on our first nine holes but made a lot of putts and a lot of birdies coming in and hopefully that will boost everyone's confidence going into tomorrow.”

Freshmen Emily Collins and Anne-Catherine Tanguay each shot a 3-under 69, the lowest 18-hole score of any Sooner in the history of the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic.

Collins, who is 4 under par overall, sits in a tie for first place with Arkansas' Kelli Shean. The OU freshman recorded seven second-round birdies, including five on her final eight holes.

“I was patient all day, even when my putts weren't falling on my front nine,” said Collins. “My putts finally starting falling and I made four birdies in a row at one point.”

Tanguay (-3) stands in a tie for third place (just one stroke out of first) in the 48-player field. The Quebec City native recorded four birdies and 13 pars.

“My long game was pretty good,” said Tanguay. “I hit a lot of greens and a lot of fairways. My strong point was definitely my putting. I didn't miss any putts inside 20 feet.”

Senior Ellen Mueller shot a 74 (+2) and is tied with freshman teammate Chirapat Jao-Javanil for eighth place with an overall score of 147 (+3). Four Sooners are in the field's top eight heading into Sunday's final round.

Sophomore Taylor Schmidt shot a 79 (+7) to finish the day in a tie for 29th at +12.

Competing for the Sooners on an individual level are freshman Mariah Montoya (tied for 29th at 156) and senior Sara Hemingway and junior Brooke Collins (both tied for 34th at 158).

The final round of the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic will begin Sunday with an 8 a.m. CT shotgun start. Admission is free to the public and live stats are available at golfstat.com.
