No. 13 Sooners Take Early Lead at Own Susie Maxwell

NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma women's golf team fired a season-low 287 (-1) in the first round of the 32nd Susie Maxwell Berning Classic at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman on Friday. OU holds a three-stroke lead on second-place teams Tulsa and Arkansas (290).

The Sooners, ranked No. 13 in the Golfstat.com rankings, tied the school record for lowest 18-hole score in any event and set the school record for lowest one-round total in the Susie Maxwell.

“The girls performed very well today,” said OU head coach Veronique Drouin. “It was exciting with all of the birdies they were making. We've been practicing a ton out here and hopefully it will help everyone's confidence the rest of the weekend and the rest of the fall season.”

Freshmen Emily Collins and Chirapat Jao-Javanil each shot a one-under 71 (three birdies and two bogeys) and are tied for fourth place. They trail leader Kamryn Ruffin of Tulsa by three strokes.

“I could've pushed myself a little better,” said Jao-Javanil. “The greens were pretty bumpy today and I lost my patience and made a few bogeys. Overall, I'm happy. Tomorrow I need to be steadier and hopefully my putts will drop.”

Said Collins, “I felt like I putted really well. I played consistent and didn't get ahead of myself.“

Despite recording a triple bogey on the 16th hole, fellow freshman Anne-Catherine Tanguay finished the round at an even-par 72. The Quebec City native is tied for seventh place. She carded four biridies on the day, including three on the front side.

Senior Ellen Mueller sits in a tie for 10th place after shooting a 73 (+1). Competing in her third Susie Maxwell, Mueller finished in the top 10 in both of her previous appearances.

Sophomore Taylor Schmidt shot a 77 (+5) to finish the day in a tie for 20th out of 48 competitors.

Participating for the Sooners unattached from team scoring are senior Sara Hemingway (78), freshman Mariah Montoya (78) and junior Brooke Collins.

With two rounds remaining, Drouin sees no need to change her squad's game plan.

“Each girl is going to stick to her own strategy,” said the second-year OU coach. “Everyone plays the golf course differently and I think if they can get it close and keep making those putts it will be huge for us the rest of the weekend.”

The Sooners will tee off with the rest of the Susie Maxwell field Saturday in an 8 a.m. CT shotgun start. Sunday's final round will also begin at 8 a.m. Admission is free to the public and live stats are available at golfstat.com.
