NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma women's golf team will host the 32nd Susie Maxwell Berning Classic Sept. 24-26 (Friday-Sunday) in Norman at the par-72 Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club. The Sooners enter their second tournament of the fall season ranked No. 13 in the Golfstat.com rankings after a record-breaking performance at the Cougar Classic in Charleston, S.C., two weeks ago.
OU will be joined in the eight-team tournament by No. 14 Ole Miss, Arkansas, Middle Tennessee State, Oklahoma City University, Redlands Community College, Texas State, Tulsa and Texas State.
“It's always exciting to host a tournament,” said OU head coach Veronique Drouin. “It's nice to not worry about travel and to play a course we know. It also gives us the opportunity to have members of the OU community come out and show the girls their support. The staff here at Jimmie Austin has been working hard to have the course in top shape.”
The Sooners are coming off a third-place finish at the Cougar Classic after posting a score of 872 (+8), the lowest 54-hole total in school history. OU finished four strokes behind second-place finisher and Susie Maxwell Berning Classic participant Ole Miss.
Leading the Sooners in the No. 1 position is freshman Emily Collins. The Colleyville, Texas, native is coming off an eighth-place finish at the Cougar Classic after scoring a 216 (E), the second lowest three-round score by a freshman in OU history.

Senior Ellen Mueller, who has finished in the top 10 in both of her previous appearances in the Susie Maxwell (including a second-place showing in the spring 2009 outing), will play in the No. 2 position. The 2010 All-Big 12 honoree finished in a tie for 11th at the Cougar Classic, her 20th career top-20 finish.
Taking the No. 3 spot in the Oklahoma lineup is freshman Chirapat Jao-Javanil. The freshman's third-round score of 69 at the Cougar Classic is the lowest 18-hole collegiate score of any current Sooner. Jao-Javanil tied with Mueller in 11th place in the opening tournament.
Freshman Anne-Catherine Tanguay will play from the No. 4 spot after finishing in 26th place out of 110 competitors at the Cougar Classic.
Completing the OU lineup is sophomore Taylor Schmidt, who will competing in her 13th tournament as a Sooner.
Senior Sara Hemingway, junior Brooke Collins and freshman Mariah Montoya will join the field of 48 golfers and compete as individuals.
The Sooners will begin teeing off Friday morning at 9 CT. An 8 a.m. shotgun start will start play Saturday and Sunday.
The tournament is named after Susie Maxwell Berning, one of the all time greats of women's golf. Berning, who attended Oklahoma City University, was granted a scholarship to play on the men's golf team because the school did not have a women's team at the time. After graduating in 1963, Berning entered the LPGA, where she would go on to win three U.S. Open titles.
Oklahoma has won the tournament 12 times, including the most recent in the spring of 2009.
The Susie Maxwell Berning Classic will be the only opportunity in the 2010-11 season for OU fans to see the squad compete in the Norman area. Fans are encouraged to come out and support the Sooners with free admission all weekend. Live stats will be available on golfstat.com.
