NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma women's golf team recorded a third-place finish Tuesday at the 21-team Cougar Classic in Charleston, S.C., after shooting a third-round 288 (E) at the par-72 Yeamans Hall Country Club. The Sooners' three-round score of 872 (+8) broke the school record for lowest 54-hole total by two strokes.

“I'm proud of the way the girls played,” said OU head coach Veronique Drouin. “They've been working hard and it's been great to see it pay off. We're honored to hold the record, and are excited to go out and break it again.”

The Sooners placed 12 strokes behind team champion North Carolina (860) and four strokes behind second-place Ole Miss (868). OU finished ahead of three top-25 squads: Florida State (ranked No. 18 by Golfweek), Florida (No. 19) and South Carolina (No. 25).

Leading the Sooners in her debut tournament was freshman Emily Collins, who finished in a tie for eighth place out of 110 competitors with a three-round score of 216 (E). Collins' total represents the second lowest 54-hole score by a freshman in OU history.

Freshman Chirapat Jao-Javanil recorded the team's lowest 18-hole score Tuesday with a 3-under 69, the lowest career best of any current Sooner. She finished in an 11th-place tie with senior Ellen Mueller (218), who shot an even 72 Tuesday.

This marks the first tournament in Drouin's tenure that three Sooners have placed in the top 11.

“The girls' performance this week has just been awesome,” said the second-year OU head coach. “They had some big birdies coming down the stretch today that secured our third-place finish. A top-three finish is a great way to start our season.”

Freshman Anne-Catherine Tanguay (222) finished in a tie for 26th place and sophomore Taylor Schmidt (228) finished in a tie for 56th.

The Sooners will take to the course again in two weeks, this time playing host to the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic, held at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman.

The nine-team tournament will be the only opportunity in the 2010-11 season for OU fans to see the squad compete in the Norman area. Fans are encouraged to come out and support the Sooners Sept. 24-26 with free admission all weekend. Additional information will be made available via the team's Twitter page (twitter.com/OU_WomensGolf) and Soonersports.com.
