NORMAN, Okla. – The Oklahoma women's golf team climbed to third place in the Cougar Classic after shooting a 291 (+3) in Monday's second round of the 21-team event held at the par-72 Yeamans Hall Country Club in Charleston, S.C.

The team's current 36-hole total of 584 (+8) is one of the lowest in school history.

“The girls played really solid golf today,” said OU head coach Veronique Drouin. “We were hitting close all day but couldn't get all of the putts to fall. We made some good birdies coming in and hopefully that will give the team some confidence for tomorrow's final round.”

The Sooners, who began the day in a tie for fifth, were led by freshman Emily Collins for the second day in a row. Collins shot an even-par 72 and is tied for sixth with an overall score of 143 (-1), just three strokes out of first place.

Senior Ellen Mueller and freshmen Chirapat Jao-Javanil and Anne-Catherine Tanguay also contributed to the Sooners' low score by each shooting a 1-over 73. Sophomore Taylor Schmidt shot an 80 (+8) to finish the day in a tie for 64th place.

Collins, Mueller, Tanguay and Jao-Javanil all stand in the top 32 of the tournament's 110 competitors.

Overall, the Sooners' score was the lowest one-round total since Drouin took over the program in 2009.

North Carolina sits at 570 (-6) to lead the team competition. The Tar Heels have three golfers in the top five. South Carolina (579) stands in second place, just five strokes ahead of OU and Ole Miss.

Despite UNC's commanding lead over the rest of the field, Drouin's Sooners haven't given up on the tournament crown.

“Anything can happen in team golf,” said Drouin. “So we're planning on playing our game tomorrow and adding up the scores at the end of the day. I'm really proud of the way the girls are playing. They have been working hard and it's definitely showing.”

The Sooners will tee off for the Cougar Classic's final round with a shotgun start Tuesday morning starting at 7:30 CT. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
