Five Sooners Qualify for Visa Championships

NORMAN, Okla. -- Five University of Oklahoma gymnasts qualified to compete in the 2010 Visa National Championships, in Hartford, Conn., Aug. 10-14.

The 2010 Visa Championships, USA Gymnastics' national championships, features the country's best gymnasts vying for national titles and spots on the U.S. National Team. Men's and women's gymnastics will be held at the XL Center, with rhythmic gymnastics and trampoline and tumbling staged at the University of Hartford's Chase Arena.

OU senior Steven Legendre and freshman Jacob Dalton, Alex Naddour, Chris Stehl and OU Letterwinners Chris Brooks and Jonathan Horton will represent Oklahoma at the Visa Championships.

Stehl was the only OU gymnast to compete in the qualifier, which last opportunity for the country's male gymnasts to qualify for this year's Visa Championships. Brooks, Dalton, Horton, Naddour and Legendre were already qualified by being on the U.S. Senior National Team.

Last year, Jonathan Horton took home the 2009 Visa Championship title, while Horton, Legendre and Dalton were named to the U.S. Senior National Team.  At the conclusion of the competition, Horton was named USA Gymnastics' Athlete of the Year and Williams was named Coach of the Year.

The field included a combination of men vying for berths to the Visa Championships and gymnasts who previously qualified and used the Qualifier as a tune-up for the Visa Championships. The complete men's field for the Visa Championships will be released later this week.

The gymnasts who advanced to the Visa Championships from the Men's National Qualifier, along with results from the competition, are listed below. No awards were presented at the Qualifier. For the senior division the top 23 gymnasts using the Men's Program Committee 20-point system advanced to the Visa Championships. Nine age-eligible juniors qualified for the Visa Championships.
