DES MOINES, Iowa — Current Oklahoma Track and Field athlete Eric Bailey advanced from the prelims of the 400-meter hurdles Thursday at the USA Track and Field Championships while OU alum Toni Smith finished third in the women's triple jump. Smith's fellow alum, Leslie Cole, also advanced out of the first round of the women's 400-meter dash.

Bailey automatically advanced to the next round of the event as he clocked one of the four fastest times in his heat, a time of 51.13. The performance was the 11th best as Bailey was fourth in the second heat.

Smith, who closed out her OU career in 2008 as the OU record holder in the triple jump, took bronze in the event as she leapt a distance of 44-11.00 (13.69) on her third attempt.

The Oklahoma record holder in the 400, Cole narrowly advanced to the next round of competition as she grabbed the 16th and final qualifying spot with a time of 53.77 in the event's second heat.

Claire McConnell finished 24th overall in the women's heptathlon in the junior division. The freshman accumulated 4,257 points throughout the two-day event as she capped it with a seventh-place finish in the 800-meter run, clocking a time of 2:26.16. The point total was the third best total of the year for McConnell, who finished 12th in the event at the Big 12 Championships.

McConnell made a jump in the standings Wednesday evening as she finished 15th in the shot put with a throw of 31-2.00 (9.50) before finishing 16th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.05.

Oklahoma action at the event resumes on Friday when Amy Backel and Brittany Borman head to Drake Stadium for the women's javelin at 6 p.m. OU's Neelon Greenwood will take to the runway in the men's triple jump at the same time.
