Men's Gymnastics to Host 2010 Olympic Day

NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma gymnastics program, in conjunction with the United State Olympic Committee, will be holding the 2010 Olympic Day on June 23 at the Sam Viersen Gymnastics Center.

“We want to support the USOC in recognizing the Olympics and Olympians around the country,” said OU Head Coach Mark Williams. “We want to bring it down to the local community and support the effort in any way we can.”

The event will be conducted by the OU coaches and gymnasts during the boys' and girls' summer gymnastics camp.

The City of Norman will present a proclamation of achievement to the Sooners' program and USOC for its work during Olympic Day.

“To have the city's support and recognition with a proclamation is very special,” added Williams. “Both assistant coach Rustam Sharipov and I hope that we can also motivate the youth by talking to the kids at camp about our Olympic experiences and what it means to compete for your country.”

From June 19-27, 2010, communities across the United State will celebrate Olympic Day through athlete led discussions with youth about the Olympic Values of excellence, friendship and respect. Sport demonstrations, fun runs and festivals will help introduce young people to Olympic and Paralympic sport.

Olympic Day, held annually on June 23 in celebrated by thousands of people, in more than 160 countries. Commemorating the birth of the modern Olympic Games, Olympic Day is not only a celebration, but an international effort to promote fitness and well-being in addition to Olympic ideals of fair play, perseverance, respect and sportsmanship.

Olympic Day was introduced in 1948 to commemorate the birth of the modern Olympic Games on 23 June 1894 at the Sorbonne in Paris. The goal of Olympic Day is to promote the Olympic values and participation in sport across the globe regardless of age, gender or athletic ability.
