Reine's Power Forces Decisive Game Three

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Sophomore Cody Reine drove in five runs off two homers as No. 11 Oklahoma evened the best-of-three series with No. 1 Virginia by a 10-7 count in game two on Sunday.
The teams will square off Monday night at 6 p.m. CT for a spot in the 2010 College World Series.
Reine (2-for-3) hit a three-run shot to cap a four-run first inning and give the Sooners (48-16) a 4-2 lead and came back in the fifth with a two-run blast, his eighth on the year, to extend the advantage to 8-4.
"Another good, hard fought contest. I thought we had a little bit of everything in that ball game. I thought the biggest key to it was us answering the three-run shot in the sixth inning and Max (White) hits a two-run shot with a guy at second base."
Three separate times in the game, Virginia (51-13) posted multiple runs in an inning, but OU countered each time to take or extend its lead in the ball game. Reine's first two homer game was accompanied by freshman Max White (2-for-5), who hit his 15th homer of the season to drive in two runs and give OU a lead it would not relinquish at 10-7.
Another freshman, Jack Mayfield, worked some magic on the mound and improved to 5-0 after holding Virginia's offense at bay from the fourth inning into the seventh.
Mayfield relieved Zach Neal, who lasted just three innings in the start and paved the way for Jeremy Erben and his fifth save of the year. Erben nailed down the save with the final 2 2/3 innings of work after pitching an 1 1/3 last night. In the two games, Erben faced 14 batters and induced three double plays.
Virginia scored a pair of runs in the first inning off Neal, but the Sooner offense wasted little time in responding and plated four runs in the bottom half of the frame. Tyler Ogle drove in the first run on a single to the gap in right center, bringing around Chris Ellison and Reine Followed with his seventh homer of the year. The three-run blast gave OU a 4-2 lead.
The Cavaliers battled back in the top of the third and tied the game up at four with back-to-back sacrifice flies. Again, Oklahoma countered immediately in the home half and regained a two-run advantage. Caleb Bushyhead gave OU a 5-4 lead on a single up the middle and Danny Black's sacrifice fly provided the 6-4 advantage.
Reine doubled the Sooners two-run lead with his second homer of the game, a two-run shot that cleared the fence in right-center field and gave OU an 8-4 lead.
Neither starting pitcher lasted more than three innings and Virginia's Robert Morey (9-4) took the loss with two innings that saw OU plate the first six runs off three hits and three walks. It marked the shortest of Morey's 25 career starts, who had lasted at least four innings in the previous 24 appearances.
Mayfield kept the Cavaliers' offense at bay until Phil Gosselin sent a 2-0, two-out pitch over the fence in left to plate three runs and cut the lead down to one. He was taken out in the seventh with runners on first and second and Erben took advantage of the pressure situation with another double play ball to end the threat.
