CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Oklahoma is headed back to the College World Series.
The No. 11 Sooners (49-16) knocked off No. 1 Virginia, 11-0, on Monday in the third game of the Charlottesville Super Regional to add the program's 10th CWS appearance to the record books.
The 10 trips ranks in a tie for 13th all-time among all DI programs. The Sooners last appearance was in 1995, one year after clinching the program's second national title in 1994. OU's other trips to Omaha include 1992, 1976, 1975, 1974, 1973, 1972 and 1951.
"It's surreal. We're going to Omaha, the last year in Rosenblatt," said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway, who coached as an assistant on OU's staff during the program's last three trips to the CWS. "We are looking forward to pulling up on the bus and seeing the statue and being a part of the last year in Rosenblatt Stadium."
Cody Reine (3-for-5, 2 HR, 6 RBI) continued his postseason tear and gave OU an early 3-0 lead with a two-out, three-run homer to right field in the first inning. The homer was the first of four on the day for the Sooners as they cruised to their second straight win over the Cavaliers (51-14) at Davenport Field. The last time UVA lost two straight games was in 2009 on May 14-15 against Virginia Tech (the last weekend of the regular season). The last time UVa failed to score was at Miami (10-0) on April 27, 2008.
"I really can't explain it," said Reine. "It's one of those things that finds a player every now and then. It happened to be me this weekend, it could be anyone else next weekend."
While Reine finished with his second straight two-home run game, Bobby Shore produced an impressive eight-inning outing. Ryan Duke finished off the ninth as OU recorded its first shutout in NCAA tournament play since 1992 against UCLA. That 10-0 win sent OU to its then-seventh CWS.
Shore, the MVP of the Norman Regional last weekend, improved to 10-4 as he scattered four hits and two walks across the eight frames. He also struck out five batters and did not allow a Cavalier to enter scoring position.
"I was in a groove, I was throwing strikes," said Shore.
The Sooners used a similar offensive attack from game two where they chased Virginia's starter out of the game. Branden Kline only lasted 1 2/3 innings and gave up four runs in his first loss of the year. But the Cavalier bullpen was unable to hold OU's offense at bay which received solo homers from Cameron Seitzer in the second inning and Tyler Ogle in the fifth.
The only runs scored by OU that were not off the long ball came In the sixth. Chris Ellison hit a hard line drive off first baseman John Hicks' glove that allowed Danny Black to scored from third as OU built a 6-0 advantage and Garrett Buechele followed with a two-run double two batters later.
OU will open the 2010 College World Series on Sunday, June 20 at 1 p.m. against South Carolina.
