Oklahoma (47-16) held a 2-1 advantage headed to the bottom of the sixth after Max White's two-out single provided its first and only lead of the game. However, OU stranded three of its eight runners left on base over the final three frames, including two in the ninth that represented the tying and go-ahead runs.
Virginia (51-12) did not outhit OU but its starter, Danny Hultzen, finished strong with eight innings and 130 pitches. He struck out nine and improved to 11-1 with two runs allowed off six hits and a walk. Hultzen's outing paved the way for Kevin Arico's 18th save of the season.
Oklahoma found itself in an early hole as the Cavaliers' leadoff hitter, Phil Gosselin, drove a 1-1 pitch in the first over the fence in left field off Michael Rocha.
Rocha settled down over the next four frames and allowed just one hit, but he ran into the duo of Keith Wermann and Dan Grovatt, who led off the sixth frame with a double and a home run, respectively. Rocha lasted 6 1/3 innings but dropped to 7-2 after suffering his first loss since April 11 against Missouri.
"I thought our guy Michael Rocha pitched terrific," said Golloway. "He left a couple balls up and seems like we probably only had four or five pitches up the whole day and two of them got hit really hard."
After four frames, the Sooners trailed 1-0 but battled back with a run in the fifth inning to tie the ball game up at one apiece. White began the frame with a hit by pitch and advanced to second base on Ricky Eisenberg's sacrifice bunt. After a strikeout by Caleb Bushyhead, OU received a big two-out hit by Chris Ellison. The base knock through the left side of the infield brought around White to score.
In the seventh, Rocha ran into more trouble and was relieved by Jeremy Erben after recording one out. Rocha finished with six strikeouts and despite the fact that the Cavaliers loaded the bases in the frame, he was not charged with another run as Erben induced Werman into a 1-2-3 double play to end the threat.
The Sooners and Cavaliers will square off again in game two on Sunday at 3 p.m. CT on the Sooner Sports Network, KREF 1400 AM, and free online at SoonerSports.com. The game can also be seen on live on ESPN (Cox Ch. 720 HD in Oklahoma City) and ESPN3.com.
"Our guys are well aware in this super regional format, you have great opportunities the next day," added Golloway. "We have to stay in there and battle. Our guys will be ready."
