A scene from last Saturday...

The athletics department official said, "Thank you."

The Sooner fan responded, "No, thank you."

Again, the official stated, "Really, I insist, thank you."

To which the fan replied, "That's very nice, but, no, thank you."

That's pretty much the way it sounded last Saturday in and around the football facilities at OU.

The athletics department held its first Super Saturday as part of the Year of the Fan promotion. Season ticket holders were invited to the stadium to see just about everything.

They saw the locker room, Bob Stoops' office, the SoonerVision studios, the press box and more, and at every turn, they kept thanking us for inviting them.

Obviously, they didn't get it.

We did the whole thing to thank them.

Not long ago, several of us began wondering if OU Athletics had become too big to be personal. Just the prospect of such a thing concerned us. Being too big for the people is un-Oklahoma.

That's when the idea was hatched to celebrate the fans for an entire year and create a time when we could see them face-to-face and thank them for all of the opportunities they have created here through their loyal support.

At the same time, a number of upgrades had been completed to our football facilities and it occurred to us that perhaps our fans would like a chance to see the changes, all of them. Our ulterior motive was that once they were on our turf, we could thank them properly with a smile and a handshake.

So this was a living, breathing thank-you card from the OU Athletics Department to its fans.

And they just didn't get it. The more we thanked them, the more they thanked us. We couldn't get in the last word.

It was a vicious cycle. A wonderfully vicious cycle.

By the time the day had concluded, we could tell that our visitors enjoyed ourselves... almost as much as we enjoyed hosting them.

The elation among our staff was universal. Some called it one of the best events we had ever hosted, and it was so because of the free flowing admiration that a school and its fans expressed for one another.

That said, to reiterate, the whole day was designed for us to thank, in a personal way, the people who mean so very much to us.

Now that I have the setting all to myself, with no fear of someone trying to thank us in return, let us simply say how much you, our fans, mean to us and how honored we were to have you in the facilities that are just as much yours as they are ours.

There is only one Oklahoma, and it's all of us.

Now, if you must say something in response, Boomer...

Connecting With You
The Year of the Fan is an opportunity for the OU Athletics Department to thank you, the Sooner season ticket holder, for supporting the Sooners. The Super Saturday event provided an opportunity for season ticket holders in any sport to tour all of the OU football facilities. We have more Year of the Fan events planned but perhaps you have some ideas too. Post your suggestions on the OU Athletics Department Facebook page or email us here in the OU Athletics Department.
