ATHENS, Ga. - Oklahoma senior Andrei Daescu's collegiate singles career came to a close Wednesday as Georgia's Javier Garrapiz defeated the Sooner in straight sets in the 2010 NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championships, at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Georgia.
"Andrei fought hard today as he always does," head coach John Roddick said. "He had a couple of chances in both sets that he came up a bit short on today. I am fortunate, as a coach, to have been able to work with a player and person like Andrei. He has been the spark and leader of this team and he will be missed."
Daescu, ranked No. 28, dropped his first set, 6-4, and his second set, 6-3, to 22nd-ranked Garrapiz in first round action.
The Bucharest, Romania, native ends his singles career at OU with a record of 45-43, where he manned the No. 1 position for the majority of his career. However, Daescu's career is not over.
Daescu and freshman Costin Paval, ranked No. 18, will take on Florida's No. 8-ranked Antoine Benneteau and Alexandre Lacroix in the NCAA Men's Doubles Championships on Thursday, May 27 at 4 p.m. The duo boasts an 11-7 record at No. 1 doubles.
"I know Andrie will give his all in the doubles with Costin, and hopefully they can make a good run," said Roddick.
