NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma's Karen Shump was named the 2010 Big 12 Women's Freshman of the Year the conference announced Wednesday after the redshirt-freshman swept the indoor and outdoor Big 12 titles in the shot put. With Sunday's win in the shot, Shump became the first ever freshman in Big 12 history to sweep the shot put.
The Media, Pa., native beat her teammate and classmate, Tia Brooks, by over a foot on Sunday with a throw of 54-8.75 (16.68) to claim Oklahoma's fifth conference title in the event. The one-two finish by the redshirt-freshmen was an identical finish to the Big 12 Indoor Championships where the duo claimed 18 team points. The duo would later go on to claim All-America honors in the event at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Shump, who already holds the OU record in both the indoor and outdoor shot put, currently ranks fourth nationally in the event and fifth nationally in the discus as she prepares for next weekend's NCAA preliminary round in Austin, Texas.
