The Sooners plated a pair of runs in the eighth and ninth inning but it wasn't enough as the loss dropped them to 35-14 overall with seven games remaining.
Memphis improved to 26-24 and the second straight game in the all-time series with Oklahoma. The Tigers won the only other meeting in the series, 2-1, at the Service Academies Classic (Millington, Tenn.) in 2006.
"To sit there and watch this team play uninspired was disappointing," said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. "We have to learn from it and come back and win the series."
OU will look to rebound in game two on Saturday. That contest was moved up to a 2 p.m. start at L. Dale Mitchell Park in order to accommodate inclement weather in the Norman area. The game was originally scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
Zach Neal (7-2) suffered his first loss since April 1 against Texas on Friday night after lasting 5 2/3 innings and giving up three runs off eight hits. Neal struck out three and did not walk a batter but Memphis chased him out of the sixth with three runs off a pair of doubles and two singles.
The Sooners struck first after Cameron Seitzer was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the third but the offense never got rolling and stranded eight runners on the evening.
Down 4-1, Caleb Bushyhead cut the lead down to two runs on his fifth home run of the year, a solo shot to right field in the eighth inning.
In the ninth, Cody Reine's sacrifice fly cut the lead to one but it also marked the second out as Chase Joiner recorded his second save of the year with a strikeout against Garrett Buechele.
Ryan Fraser (7-2) led the Tigers on Friday with six innings pitched despite walking five batters. Fraser allowed just one run off three hits and struck out six.
