NORMAN, Okla. - The 20th-ranked Oklahoma men's tennis team squares off against No. 40 Tulsa Friday, May 14 at 2 p.m., in the first round of the 2010 NCAA Championships at the Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman.
The Sooners (16-7, 2-5 Big 12) are the No. 2 seed in the Norman Regional, while Tulsa (16-10) enters the in-state dual as the No. 3 seed.
Earlier in the season, OU edged then-No. 31 Tulsa, 4-3, on the road. The Sooners hold a 29-18 advantage over the Hurricane. Below are the results from the first meeting between the Sooners and the Hurricane.
"We had a tough one with them last time with it ending 4-3," head coach John Roddick said. "Our guys know that they are going to have to go out and play well and start quick in doubles. We have been working a lot on playing disciplined singles with good shot selection. If they do that then we should put ourselves in a good position."
On the year, OU has defeated 12 teams ranked in the ITA top-72, while each of the Sooners' losses has come against teams ranked in the ITA top 14. In addition, the Sooners have defeated San Diego State (No. 50) and OSU (No. 48) twice this season.
The Sooners are led by a trio of ranked individuals including: 28th-ranked Andrei Daescu, No. 65-ranked Ionut Beleleu (13-8) and No. 74 Costin Paval (16-4). In doubles, OU has two ranked tandems in No. 18 Daescu and Paval (9-6) and 49th-ranked Daescu and Beleleu. Daescu and Paval have defeated three pairs ranked in the top-30 and a total of five in the top 62.
Tulsa is led by 42nd-ranked Marcelo Arevalo, the Conference USA freshman of the year, and No. 60 Ashley Watling in singles, while Watling and Philip Stephens comprise the No. 24-ranked tandem in the nation.
The winner of Friday's match will face either the No. 1 seed Texas Tech or the No. 4 seed Wichita State Saturday, at 2 p.m.
In the result of inclement weather, match times and locations will be updated on SoonerSports.com.
