Tuesday's game marked the first time the Bedlam series was played on a campus site since 1996. A wild pitch in the 10th inning by Ryan Duke (0-1) with two outs resulted in the game-winning run. Duke retired the first two batters in the inning and the runner that crossed home plate reached earlier in the game on an error.
"It's a disheartening loss," said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. "You want ball games that both teams are going to be better for. That is an RPI game that can really help them and hopefully it wont hurt us. Hopefully this game will prepare us for the weekend."
OU fell to 25-8 overall after the contest as the Cowboys improved to 19-12. The Sooners have won three of the last five Bedlam games and entered Tuesday with a 28-25 record in Stillwater since 1962.
The Sooners trailed 6-3 after the bottom of the seventh, but battled back late in the game.
Cody Reine helped extend the game after connecting on a RBI single in the top of the ninth. One inning earlier, Buechele hit his second home run of the game with a two-run job that cut the Cowboys lead down to one at 6-5.
"We responded well, there is no doubt about that," added Golloway.
The Cowboys struck first with a two-out single by Kevin Chambers in the second. The base knock through the right side of the infield plated Kevin David, who doubled earlier in the frame.
Buechele tied the game up in the top of the fourth with a solo, two-out home run to left field, but the Cowboys immediately regained the lead with three runs in the bottom of the frame. It was Buechele's seventh homer of the season.
The Sooners came right back in the top of the fifth as Kaleb Herren led off the inning with a solo shot to left and Chris Ellison brought OU within one on a two-out RBI single up the middle.
The three homers tied a season high for Oklahoma as the offense eclipsed the double-digit mark in hits with 10. The Sooners suffered just its third loss of the season when out hitting the opponent.
The Cowboys extended their 4-3 lead to two runs in the bottom of the sixth off OU starter J.R. Robinson. The RBI single by
Davis Duren ended Robinson's outing after 5 1/3 innings. Robinson gave up five runs, but only one was earned off eight hits and three walks. The left-handed senior was one shy of tying his career high with seven strikeouts on the night.
OSU's Mike Strong lasted seven innings and gave up three runs on five hits and was in position for the win until reliever Brad Propst gave up the two-run homer to Buechele in the eighth and the single to Reine in the ninth. Ian McCarthy pitched the final 1 1/3 inning to improve to 1-1.
The Sooners return to Big 12 play at Texas Tech for a three-game series that gets started on Friday, April 16 at 6:30 p.m. Game two is set for 5 p.m. on Saturday and the series finale is slated for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
