OU received a trio of strong pitching performances on Saturday as well. Bobby Shore improved to 4-0 after lasting five innings with just one run allowed while Jeremy Erben and Ryan Duke closed things out on Nebraska (11-11, 1-4).
The Sooners have won five straight games and have claimed victory in 15 of the last 16 outings.
Erben took over the pitching duties from the sixth through eighth innings and tossed his ninth consecutive scoreless outing. Erben, who was named to the Collegiate Baseball Foundation's Pitcher of the Year watch list earlier this week, has not allowed a run in the last 22 innings pitched.
Duke in the meantime recorded his nation-leading eighth save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth inning that featured two strikeouts. Duke is four saves shy of tying Jeff Bajenaru's career total of 28 at Oklahoma.
"I thought we threw the ball really well, and of course with the bullpen with typical Erben and Duke performances," said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. "Erben set it up and Duke gets the save and does his job."
The Sooners led 3-1 heading into the fifth, and Johnson caught a line drive that looked destined for a base hit, but his sliding catch ended a bases-loaded situation for the Huskers against Shore. It was Shore's final inning before giving way to the Sooner bullpen.
"Casey made the play of the game," said Golloway. "That is a veteran play and a courageous play. He's been doing that in practice and he is to be commended. He has worked hard to become a better defender and it showed today."
It was the third and final bases-loaded opportunity for the Huskers who stranded 13 base runners on Saturday.
Nebraska also loaded the bases in the first but Shore and the Sooners escaped without allowing a run thanks to a pickoff at first base by catcher Bryan Groth. Shore battled out of another bases-loaded jam in the third inning with a 6-4-3 double play ball that ended the threat.
White, who made his second consecutive start in right field, started the Sooners' scoring efforts on Saturday with a two-out single through the left side of the infield. The base knock came with the bases loaded and Garrett Buechele and Ross Hubbard came around to score.
Chris Ellison's two-out RBI in the fourth inning extended his hitting streak to nine games. Ellison's 16th RBI of the season plated Casey Johnson, who singled to lead off the frame and extend his hitting streak to 10 games.
Cameron Seitzer also extended his team-best hitting streak to 11 games with a double in the third inning, while Caleb Bushyhead extended his streak to nine games with a single up the middle in the ninth.
Michael Mariot (2-3) held OU's offense at bay for 6 1/3 innings but exited the game with the bases loaded and one out in the top of the seventh. Chase Adams induced the inning-ending double play that ended the Sooners' threat.
OU and Nebraska will conclude the three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m. The game can be heard on the Sooner Sports Network, KREF 1400 AM and free online at SoonerSports.com.
