Oklahoma Football History & Tradition

HOW OKLAHOMA GOT HERE
Oklahoma finished the regular season in a three-way tie for the Big 12 Conference South Division titles. The Sooners, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M all finished with 6-2 league marks. By Big 12 rule, the tie was broken by the BCS standings. Oklahoma is No. 9 on that list with OSU at No. 14 and A&M at No. 18.
The winner of this game fills the Big 12's slot in the BCS with an appearance in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.
Oklahoma is designated the visiting team. That is always the case for any team playing the championship game in a city that falls within its Big 12 division.

OU-NEBRASKA
Oklahoma and Nebraska played in 71 consecutive seasons (1928-1997). The consecutive string was broken in 1998 when the two rotated off each other's schedule as part of the South and North Division scheduling in the Big 12.
This is the fifth neutral field game in the series. The others were played in Oklahoma City, Omaha, Miami, Fla., and Kansas City.
This marks the 25th time in the last 75 years that both Oklahoma and Nebraska will enter the game with a national ranking (there were no rankings prior to 1936). At least one of the teams has been ranked at the time of the game 60 times including this one.
A Look Back at the OU-Nebraska Series

BIFF COACHED BOTH OU AND NEBRASKA
Lawrence “Biff” Jones is the only man to serve as head coach at both schools. He was 9-6-3 in two seasons (1935-36) at OU, then 28-14-4 in five seasons (1937-41) with the Huskers.

TIES WITH NEBRASKA
Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops and Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini go back to their childhoods in Youngstown, Ohio. Both attended Cardinal Mooney HS in Youngstown (Pelini is seven years younger than Stoops).
Pelini was co-defensive coordinator on the Oklahoma staff in 2004. The Sooners won the Big 12 that season and dropped a 21-14 decision to LSU in the BCS Championship Game (Sugar Bowl).
Pelini's brother, Carl, is Nebraska's defensive coordinator. He was on the Kansas State staff in from 1990-91 when OU Defensive Coordinator Brent Venables was playing for the Wildcats. NU running backs coach Tim Beck was on the KSU staff from 1991-92.
Nebraska linebackers coach Mike Ekelar was a graduate assistant at OU from 2003-04.
Oklahoma receivers coach and assistant offensive coordinator Jay Norvell was on the Nebraska coaching staff as offensive coordinator from 2004-06.

OU'S BIG 12 DOMINANCE
Oklahoma, on the strength of its eighth South Division title, is in the Big 12 championship game for an unprecedented eighth time. The Sooners are 6-1 in the contest. Teams from the South have won 10 of the previous 14 Big 12 titles.
Oklahoma won all but one of its Big 12 Championships in even-numbered years. The lone exception was 2007.
OU is two-for-two in Big 12 Championship games played in the state of Texas, defeating Colorado at Houston for the 2002 title and Missouri at San Antonio for the 2007 crown. The remainder of the Sooners' Big 12 Championship game appearances came in Kansas City, Mo.
This is the fourth different stadium in which Oklahoma has played for a title. It also competed at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo., Reliant Stadium in Houston and The Alamodome in San Antonio.

SECOND TIME IN ARLINGTON
Oklahoma has played 92 games in Dallas and five in Fort Worth, but this is just the second in the Metroplex city of Arlington.
The Sooners played in the first college football game at Cowboys Stadium when it dropped its 2009 season opener to BYU, 14-13. QB Sam Bradford, fresh off his 2008 Heisman season, was injured late in the first half of that game and did not return in the second. He saw action in only two more games in his OU career.
Oklahoma has played at least one game in the Metroplex every year since 1929 when the OU-Texas game took up residence at the Cotton Bowl on the State Fair of Texas grounds in Dallas.

RIVALRY SWEEP
Oklahoma has three opponents that fall into the rival category ... Texas, Oklahoma State and Nebraska. The Sooners are trying to sweep all three in the same season for the 21st time in their football history. The last time it happened was in 2004.

LAST GAME
Oklahoma defeated No. 10 Oklahoma State at Stillwater, 47-41, last Saturday:
The Sooners won the Bedlam game for the eighth consecutive year. OU now leads the series 82-16-7. It's the most-lopsided series involving in-state opponents.
The two teams combined to score 40 points in the fourth quarter including 24 in the final 3:03.
Oklahoma had a school-record 107 plays.
Landry Jones tied Sam Bradford's school record for passing yards in a game with 468. He competed 37-of-62 passes with four touchdowns and three interceptions. One of those picks was returned for a touchdown, the other two occurred when Jones was trying to unload the ball of out bounds.
Jones' last two touchdown passes covered 86 and 76 yards, the No. 1 and No. 4-longest plays of the season, respectively, for the Sooners. Cameron Kenney caught the 86-yarder (equaled fifth-longest in OU history), one of two TD receptions for the senior, and finished with six grabs for a career-high 141 yards. James Hanna caught the 76-yarder and finished with four catches for 130.
Ryan Broyles led all OU receivers with nine grabs for 82 yards and one touchdown.
OU converted a whopping 16-of-27 on third down.
Oklahoma's defense held Kendall Hunter to 55 yards on 13 rushes. Cowboy QB Brandon Weeden was 28-of-43 with two touchdowns, but was intercepted three times and threw for just 257 yards.
S Quinton Carter had two of those interceptions, Austin Box had the other.

CORNUCOPIA OF NOTES
Big Play Barrage: Including special teams and defensive returns, Oklahoma has 81 plays of 20 yards or longer this season. Interestingly, 50 of those (62%) have come over the last six weeks. Of the 58 offensive plays from scrimmage that covered 20 yards or more this season, 37 (64%) came during that same period.
Safety Glance: Oklahoma has scored three safeties this season, all on special teams. That total equals the 2002 campaign for the most safeties in one season under Bob Stoops. OU has a whopping 16 safeties under its current coach, eight on defense and eight on special teams. Only in 2001 and 2003 has Oklahoma failed to score a safety under Stoops.
Tough Schedule: Oklahoma's schedule currently ranks as the 12th-most difficult in FBS. Sooner past and future foes are a combined 72-49.
Penalties Plummet: Over its first four games, Oklahoma averaged 8.0 penalties for 64.3 yards per game including 13 for 113 yards at Cincinnati. In the eight games since then, the Sooners have averaged just 4.1 penalties for only 35.0 yards per game. Over the last five games, those figures have dropped to 3.8 for 34.0, respectively.
Freshmen on the Field: Thirteen true freshmen have played for OU this season with six -- CB Aaron Colvin, RB Roy Finch, WR Trey Franks, S Tony Jefferson, FB Trey Millard and WR Kenny Stills -- drawing starts. Six redshirt freshmen also have played bringing the total number of frosh who have been on the field to 19.

He is No. 4 in Big 12 history in touchdowns with 64 (tops among active D-I players).

KEEPING UP WITH JONES
QB Landry Jones has 11, 300-yard passing games in 22 starts. He is No. 3 in 300-yard games at OU. Sam Bradford and Josh Heupel, Jones' position coach, hold the record jointly at 14. He has set the school mark with three, 400-yard passing games.
Jones ranks No. 2 in the nation with 348 completions, one shy of Heupel's school record set in 1999.
His 3,947 yards is the second best season total in OU history behind Sam Bradford's 4,720 in 2008.
He had a school-record tying 468 passing yards at Oklahoma State and 452 against Colorado.
Against Iowa State, he fell one completion shy of tying the NCAA record for completion percentage in a game (min. 30 att.). He was 30-of-34 for 88.2%. The record was set by BYU's Steve Sarkesian, who was 31-of-34 against Fresno State in 1995.
The sophomore had career-best consecutive completion streaks of 13 against both Cincinnati and Iowa State.
Since opening the season against Utah State by going 17-of-36 (.472) for 217 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions, he has completed 331-of-491 (.674) for 3,408 yards with 32 touchdowns and eight INTs.

FRESHMEN CATCHING ON
For the first time in school history, three freshmen (all true) have caught touchdown passes -- Trey Franks, Trey Millard and Kenny Stills.
Kenny Stills ranks No. 1 for receptions by an OU freshman with 50, eclipsing the record of 46 by Ryan Broyles and Mark Clayton. With 630 yards, Stills ranks No. 2 among OU freshmen behind Broyles (687). He is No. 1 among true frosh.

RETURN OF THE FULLBACK
True freshman Trey Millard has 24 rushes for 74 yards and three TD, and 16 receptions for another 135 and one TD. That's more rushes and rushing yards than any OU fullback since Seth Littrell had 24 attempts for 78 yards in 2000. It's the most receptions and receiving yards since J.D. Runnells had 20 for 205 in 2005. His four touchdowns are the most by an OU fullback since Littrell had eight in 1999.

LINES ON THE LINE
After finishing 2009 with only eight healthy scholarship linemen, there are 16 on this roster.
The current depth chart features just two seniors in tackle Eric Mensik and guard Brian Lepak.
Two of Oklahoma's offensive linemen are converted tight ends -- T Eric Mensik and G Gabe Ikard.
Eight players have started in the line this season.

  DEFENSE NOTES

OU has forced at least one turnover in 139 of Stoops' 157 games and has at least one interception in 102 of the last 137 with multiple picks in 62 of the last 108 outings.
Oklahoma has 13 shutouts under its current head coach. Opponents failed to score more than seven points 34 times and scored less than 14 in 62 games.

LEWIS IS LEADING TACKLER
Weakside LB Travis Lewis has led Oklahoma in tackles in each of his first two seasons. His 109 last season were 21 more than any other player on the team. He leads the 2010 with 93 and had a season-high 14 vs. Iowa State.
Lewis, with 346 tackles (the second-highest total by a Bob Stoops player at OU), has cracked the career top 10 tackle list at OU. The record is held by the late Daryl Hunt at 530. Lewis passed Lee Roy Selmon for the No. 10 spot and now trails No. 9 Kevin Murphy by eight.
As a freshman in 2007, Lewis racked up 144 tackles to break Brian Bosworth's OU freshman record of 133.
Has double-digit tackles in 14 of 35 career games.
Lewis is trying to become only the sixth player in school history (tackles tracked since 1970) to lead Oklahoma in tackles for three straight seasons. The last to do it was Butkus Award winner Rocky Calmus from 1999-01.
Got seventh career interception against Texas Tech. He has 132 career return yards, an average of 18.6 per pick.

THE REAL DEAL
DE Jeremy Beal has 18.0 tackles for loss (No. 13 nationally) and 8.5 sacks.
Leads the Big 12 in tackles for loss and is No. 2 in sacks.
Ranks No. 2 at OU for sacks in a career with 29.0. Cedric Jones has the record at 31.5. Beal is also No. 2 in tackles for loss with 57.5. Rocky Calmus had 59.
Beal had four tackles for loss at Missouri, a career-high, and just two shy of Cedric Jones' school record.
Had 1.5 sacks and 2.5 TFL in win over Texas Tech.
He leads this team in fumbles forced with three.
Beal is the only player in school history to notch two, three-sack games in the same year. He had three each against Tulsa and Miami last season.
Nearly one-third of his career tackles have taken place behind the line of scrimmage. Beal has at least one tackle for loss in 10 of 12 games this season.
First player in school history to log 7.5 or more sacks in three different seasons.
Jeremy Beal's 2010 Video Series

FLEMING IMPRESSIVE
CB Jamell Fleming leads OU with four interceptions (tied with Quinton Carter) and 11 break-ups (No. 4 in the nation), and leads the Big 12 with 15 passes defended. That's even more impressive considering he missed one game (Texas) due to injury. The junior from Arlington, Texas, is No. 4 on the team with 63 tackles.

NELSON SURPASSES TACKLE TOTAL
With 87 tackles, a total that ranks No. 2 on the team, S Jonathan Nelson has blown past the number he posted in his first three combined (53). He equaled his career-high for a game with 11 at Missouri and Texas A&M.
Jonathan Nelson's 2010 Video Series

Q TIPS
S Quinton Carter had 17 tackles against Texas Tech. That was the best total by an OU defensive back since Brandon Everage's 19 vs. Colorado in 2002. He's No. 3 on the team with 85 stops to go with four interceptions, five deflections and a fumble recovery. Including 10 tackles vs. Baylor, he has 27 over the last two games.
Had two interceptions at Oklahoma State.

BREAKING UP NOT SO HARD
With 58 break-ups, the Sooners are positioned to have one of their best seasons in that category. Over the previous seven seasons, the best total at Oklahoma was 61 (twice). The school record was set in 2000 with an incredible 110. Last year's team had 45.
OU had a season-high 11 deflections against Colorado.

COMPLETION PERCENTAGE DOWN
Despite this pass-happy era of college football, only once under Bob Stoops has an OU team finished the year allowing a 60% completion rate. This team is at just 55.7%. Four Sooner foes this season fell under the 50%.

TAKEAWAY TRADE-OFF
Oklahoma has 26 takeaways this season ... by 15 different players. The 10 fumble recoveries are by seven different players while the 16 interceptions are by eight different Sooners.

  SPECIAL TEAMS NOTES

Oklahoma's special teams under Bob Stoops ...
There have been 27 special teams touchdowns.
OU has returned eight kickoffs and 16 punts for TDs.
The Sooners have blocked 26 kicks.

MANY HAPPY RETURNS
Information on returns during the Stoops era ...
Kickoff Returns -- 103 returns of 25 or more yards, 8 TD.
Punt Returns -- 65 returns of 15 or more yards, 16 TD.
Interception Returns -- 85 returns of 10 or more yards with 21 touchdowns.
Fumble Returns -- six returns of 15 or more yards with eight touchdowns.

BIG RUN BACKS RECENTLY
OU had been quiet in its return game until the last few weeks. It started with Mossis Madu's 77-yard kickoff return at Missouri. Then DeMarco Murray broke free on a 48-yard return at Texas A&M, while Ryan Broyles reeled off a 31-yard punt return against the Aggies before Brennen Clay's 36-yard kickoff return at Baylor.
The longest kickoff return (Madu, 77) and the longest punt return (Broyles, 31) of the season have come over the last seven games, and both occurred on the road.

PUNT COVER TEAM A STONE WALL
Last season, Sooner foes ran back 17 punts for a paltry 30 yards. That 1.76-yard average ranked No. 2 nationally. The numbers are similar this season. The opponents have 20 returns for 43 yards, an average of 2.2 yards. That figure ranks No. 2 nationally.
OU was No. 7 in net punting at 40.3 yards last season, and is No. 4 this year at 40.8.
The longest punt return OU surrendered last season was 19 yards. No other punt return exceeded six yards. This year there was one return of 25 and another of 15, but otherwise none that exceeded six. Five opponents have finished the game with negative punt return yards against OU this season.
The bugaboo has been kickoff returns. The Sooners have surrendered three for touchdowns this season, eight over the last three campaigns combined.
The Sooners have two blocked punts this season for safeties -- vs. Colorado and Texas A&M.

WAY GOOD AT PUNTER
P Tress Way has 17 boots of 50 or more yards with 17 inside the 20 and an average of 44.1 yards on 62 kicks. He's on pace for the No. 3 season average in OU history.
The soph, who also handles kickoff duties, has 38 punts of 50+ yards in his career. Jeff Ferguson (1998-01) set that OU record with 52.

STEVENS ON A ROLL
Jimmy Stevens handles extra points and short-distance field goals, and has made his last seven field goals, all over the last two games. For the season, he is 14-of-17.
At Oklahoma State, he was 4-of-4 (tied career high for makes) and scored 17 points to tie the OU game record for points by a kicker. It was the second straight game in which Stevens scored at least 15 points.
He is No. 11 at Oklahoma with 265 career points.
The 14 makes this season ranks No. 9 at OU. The last kicker to accomplish the feat was Garrett Hartley in 2005.
Patrick O'Hara is getting the call on long-distance field goals. O'Hara, who has shared kickoff duties with Tress Way, is 4-of-6 with a long of 45 at Texas A&M.

WINCHESTER RIFLES TO STARDOM
James Winchester, long-snapper for punts, has three fumble recoveries on punt coverage this season. Those three recoveries, by average per game, rank No. 19 nationally. It's an impressive accomplishment considering he has only been on the field for 62 snaps.
He recovered the game-securing fumble late vs. Texas.
He pounced on one at Cincinnati that set up the game-securing touchdown
He recovered a muffed punt at Missouri that the Sooner offense converted into a touchdown.
His dad, Mike, was OU's punter from 1984-85 and his sister, Carolyn, was on the Sooner women's basketball team from 2006-09. A younger sister, Rebecca, is a sophomore on OU's Rowing team.
