NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma wrestling squad will conclude the preseason this Wednesday, Nov. 3, when they partake in its annual Red/White scrimmage on the campus of Central Oklahoma at the Hamilton Field House in Edmond, Okla. at 7 p.m.
The intrasquad ranking matches will pit the top-two wrestlers in each weight class to help determine starters for the upcoming season. The University of Central Oklahoma Bronchos will also hold its Bronze/Blue ranking match alongside the Sooners Wednesday evening.
“I'm excited to see our guys under the lights even though it is against each other,” head coach Jack Spates said. “It is still a great opportunity to get out, in front of our fans, and demonstrate the fruit of all their hard work and these guys have been working real hard. We are really excited about our team and excited to see them Wednesday night.”
Oklahoma, ranked preseason No. 9 by Intermat and No. 7 by W.I.N. and Amateur Wrestling News, returns seven starters and six NCAA qualifiers to this year's squad. Also added to the team are 16 newcomers that comprised a stellar 2010 recruiting class that ranked in the top ten nationally. Highlighting the returning group are 2010 All-Americans Zack Bailey (141), who collected a 31-8 overall record last season, and Tyler Caldwell (174), who went 31-14 last year.
Other returning starters include 2010 Big 12 Champion Jarrod Patterson (125), Matt Lester (149 pounds), Jeff James (184) and Nathan Fernandez (285). Kendric Maple, who started for the Sooners last season will likely redshirt during the 2010-11 campaign.
Fans of both the Sooners and the Bronchos are invited to support former UCO wrestler Seth Johnson, who is currently in ICU at Mercy hospital after being diagnosed with viral cephalitis (a virus of the brain). The former Midwest City Bomber suffered a head-on collision on the wrestling mat while coaching at a local high school on Monday, Oct. 18. Johnson continues to improve with trial-and-error of treatments and is expected to fully recover. It is probable that he will need mental and physical therapy for many weeks once he leaves the hospital. All donations for the Seth Johnson Fund can be made at any First National Bank.
“I want to encourage everyone to come out and also encourage everyone to participate in the helping support the Seth Johnson Fund,” Spates said. “Seth is an outstanding young man and wrestler. Our hearts and prayers go out to him and his family.”
The Sooners will officially kick off the 2010-11 season Saturday, Nov. 7 when they compete in the Oklahoma City Open, hosted by Oklahoma City University.
