NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma's sixth national championship team, the 1985 Sooners, will celebrate the 25th anniversary of their title season this weekend.
Coaches and players from the team will gather for a reunion in Norman on Friday night. On Saturday night, the team will be honored during the OU-Colorado game at Owen Field.
Below is an excerpt from The Oklahoma Vault detailing Oklahoma's championship run during the 1985 season:
"No team started the 1985 season later than Oklahoma. The home opener took place Oct. 19 against Miami, an ominous date that cost the Sooners their perfect record and their quarterback.
Troy Aikman suffered a broken leg in the second quarter and the Hurricanes left Norman on top, 27-14.
With Aikman out, Oklahoma junked the more pass-friendly I-formation for a return to the Wishbone, an offense better suited for new starter, freshman Jamelle Holieway. The transition could not have been smoother.
In Holieway's first three games, the Sooners averaged 52.7 points. Perhaps more importantly, the defense failed to surrender more than 13 in any contest over the remainder of the season.
That included a 27-7 win over Nebraska when cello-playing tight end Keith Jackson ran for a touchdown that matched his jersey number in yards - 88.
The following week, OU blanked Oklahoma State, 13-0, in the game remembered as the "Ice Bowl." Played at night, cold temperatures and a relentless sleet turned Stillwater's Lewis Field into a rink of plastic grass.
The Orange Bowl brought together two of college football's powerhouses - Barry Switzer's Sooners and Joe Paterno's Penn State Nittany Lions.
Bosworth, the Butkus Award winner, had 13 tackles and the Sooner secondary picked off four passes, while Tim Lashar booted an Orange Bowl-record four field goals. The offensive fireworks came on a 71-yard pass from Holieway to Jackson and a 61-yard run by Lydell Carr that capped a 25-10 victory.
Both wire services proclaimed Oklahoma the national champion."

The 2010 Sooners host the Colorado Buffaloes at 8:15 p.m. with the game nationally televised by ESPN2. Oklahoma will be defending the nation's longest home win streak, currently at 34 games.
