NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma linebacker Travis Lewis has been named one of 15 semifinalists for the 26th Annual Butkus Award, which is presented annually to the top linebacker in college football.
Lewis is the leading tackler for the 6-0 Sooners, the top-rated team in the first BCS standings. He has 59 tackles along with one interception, which he returned 14 yards.
The junior from San Antonio, Texas, is trying to become only the sixth player in school history to lead OU in tackles in three consecutive seasons. He has eclipsed the century mark in each of his first two campaigns and needs just 23 more to move onto the top 10 list for career tackles at Oklahoma.
Lewis and his teammates are at Missouri this weekend for a nationally televised matchup with the Tigers, who also are 6-0.
OU has more Butkus winners than any other school. Brian Bosworth became the only two-time winner of the awards in 1985 and 1986. Rocky Calmus won it in 2001 and Teddy Lehman became the school's fourth honoree in 2003.
Dick Butkus, the pro football hall of famer for whom the award is named, wants the Butkus Award® to draw attention to the I Play Clean
TM campaign, which aims to end steroid use in organized sports. That campaign is presented by Old Spice, and receives sports nutrition support from Abbott Nutrition's EAS brand.
The Butkus Foundation also supports the Butkus Center for Cardiovascular Wellness that strives to control heart disease through early detection and preventive lifestyle modification.
The Butkus Award is selected by a 51-person panel comprised of scouts, coaches and journalists.
Considered one of the greatest football players in history, Butkus was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1979, following an illustrious career with the Chicago Bears, University of Illinois and Chicago Vocational School.
