Golfweek Names OU Its National Team of the Week

NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma women's golf team continues to reap the benefits of last week's first-place finish at the Dale McNamara Invitational by being named Golfweek's national team of the week Monday. OU senior Ellen Mueller was also named the publication's player of the week after recording her first tournament title of her collegiate career. Presiding over a field of 90 golfers, Mueller posted a comfortable seven-stroke victory.
The Sooners' performance last week produced a three-round total of 877 (+13) and placed them 23 strokes ahead of second-place Oklahoma State and Texas (+36) at the Patriot Golf Club in Owasso, Okla. The blowout victory was the Sooners' first tournament win under second-year head coach Veronique Drouin.
“This is a great way to finish the fall season,” said Drouin. “The girls have been working hard and I'm glad to see them recognized with this honor.”
Sophomore Taylor Schmidt and freshman Chirapat Jao-Javanil joined Mueller in the Dale McNamara's top 10. Schmidt finished in a career-best third-place tie with a career-low 2-over 218 while Jao-Javanil finished in a career-best seventh-place tie with a 5-over 221.
Mueller shot a 7-under-par 209, an OU 54-hole record. She fired a career-low 67 (-5) in Monday's first round and followed with a 73 (+1) Tuesday and a 3-under 69 Wednesday. She recorded 16 birdies during the event, 12 of them on The Patriot's back nine. It was her third straight top-10 finish and 13th of her career.
"It feels great to be recognized for all the hard work my teammates and I have put into the game," said Mueller. "I chose OU because of the great practice facility and it has helped me improve my game over these past four years. I'm excited to work hard in the off months and continue to set records this spring."
“She's been working hard for four years for this and I believe this will give her the confidence to return to the winner's circle this spring,” said Drouin.
Golfweek bumped up the Sooners to a No. 14 ranking Monday, their highest position this season. OU will resume play when it opens up its spring season Feb. 13-15 at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic.
