NORMAN, Okla. — While the majority of the Oklahoma Track and Field squad was in Fayetteville, Ark., the OU men's and women's throws groups remained in Norman for the Oklahoma Christian Invitational. In the comforts of their home facility, Amy Backel (shot put), Karen Shump (shot put) and K.P. Singh (weight throw) all recorded NCAA provisional distances, marks needed to be considered as at-large selections for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
The Sooners swept the top four positions in the women's shot put with Backel leading the way. The senior tossed the implement a personal-best distance of 52-4.00 (15.95) to take top honors, narrowly edging out Shump who finished second with a toss of 52-3.75 (15.94). Tia Brooks was third with a throw of 49-7.25 (15.12) while Brittany Borman finished fourth with a distance of 45-4.25 (13.82).
Singh easily won the men's weight throw, distancing himself from the second-place finisher by over 13 feet, winning the event with a throw of 65-0.00 (19.81).
Next weekend Oklahoma hosts its first indoor meet of the season with the J.D. Martin Invitational inside the Mosier Indoor Facility.
