NORMAN, Okla. – In preparation for the 2010 season, SoonerSports.com will sit down with members of the OU men's gymnastics team and look back on championship moments over the last 10 years.
In the fourth installment of the video series, OU Head Coach
Mark Williams talks about his experiences during the 2006 National Championship season and what it meant for the Sooner program.
In 2006, the Sooners won their second-consecutive NCAA title and fourth in the last five years. Williams led OU to a perfect 31-0 record, racking up a school-record 14 All-America honors, an NCAA high for the second straight year.
During the '06 championship the Sooners took the NCAA Title after posting the nation's highest score of the 2006 season. The 2006 squad also produced the eighth individual national champion under Williams as Jonathan Horton captured the all-around title, as well as the still rings and floor exercise.
Oklahoma also saw six Sooners collect a school-record 14 All-America honors. Horton led the way, collecting five honors and setting the school record for All-America honors in a career with 10 (Conner - nine).
Since the creation of collegiate men's gymnastics (1953), only seven current teams have won consecutive national championships. Oklahoma is the only men's gymnastics program to have won two straight or more on three separate occasions.
Under Williams, six University of Oklahoma gymnasts have been responsible for 17 NCAA individual national championships. The Sooners have a total of 30 title winners in the history of the program.
