WICHITA, Kan. – The University of Oklahoma volleyball team dropped their first game of the season to the University of North Carolina on Saturday morning at the Best Western Shocker Classic. The Sooners (5-1) fell in five sets [25-8, 25-17, 15-25, 21-25, 15-11] to the Tar Heels (2-3).
Junior Sarah Freudenrich set a school mark for most blocks in a single match (25-point scoring) with 10 block assists against the Tar Heels. Freudenrich came within a kill shy of a double-double with nine.
Junior Francie Ekwerekwu led the Sooners offensively with 13 kills. Sophomore Suzy Boulavsky added 12 and sophomore Caitlin Higgins had 10. Higgins also tacked on 15 digs for her first double-double of the season.
Freshman Maria Fernanda continued to lead OU defensively. Fernanda topped her previous season-high with 23 digs against UNC. Junior Bridget Laplante also contributed 15 digs.
Sophomore setter Brianne Barker led OU with a .417 hitting percentage. Barker had six kills and recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 39 assists and 11 digs.
Oklahoma returns to action later tonight taking on 25th-ranked Wichita State at 7:30 p.m. CT.
