Wrestling Begins Official Practice

NORMAN, Okla. – The University of Oklahoma wrestling squad officially kicked off the preseason Monday, Sept. 28, with a 3 p.m. workout at the Howard McCasland Field House in Norman.

“We are really excited to begin the preseason,” head coach Jack Spates said. “The work ethic, attitudes and passion in voluntary workouts have been special. The whole team has been looking forward to this day.”

Oklahoma returns eight starters from a squad that collected 16 dual wins last season, the most since 2002. Highlighting the returning group is 2009 Big 12 champion Kyle Terry. The Midwest City, Okla., product reeled off 28 straight wins last season and tallied a 30-3 overall record competing at 149 pounds.

Other returning starters include Seth Vernon (141 pounds), Zack Bailey (141), Chad Terry (157), Shane Vernon (157), Jeff James (174), Eric Lapotsky (197) and Nathan Fernandez (285).

Monday marked the first official practice for fifteen freshmen that comprise the 2009 recruiting class, which ranked in the top three nationally according to Intermat and the Open Mat.

Oklahoma will host its annual Red/White scrimmage on Nov. 5 before opening the season Nov. 11 versus Central Oklahoma in Edmond.
