NORMAN, Okla. - The back-to-back Big 12 champion OU women's gymnastics team began mandatory practices on Friday in preparation for the 2010 season.
The Sooners are training at an off-campus location, with construction of the state-of-the-art Sam Viersen OU Gymnastics Center set to be completed in January.
Oklahoma returns 11 gymnasts from last year's squad including 2009 All-American Megan Ferguson. Ferguson also shared the bars and beam title at the 2009 conference championship, becoming the first gymnast in Big 12 history to win a pair of titles during a freshman campaign.
Seven different gymnasts on the current roster have won an event title during their OU career, including nine by Hollie Vise a year ago, the most of any returner.
Other returners include Candace Cindell, Jackie Flanery, Natasha Kelley, Julie Kramer, Mary Mantle, Natalie Ratcliff, Melanie Root, Kristin Smith and Sara Stone.

Friday marked the first official practice of freshmen Bethany Neubauer, Kayla Nowak, Brie Olson and Nitya Ramaswami. All four have been in Norman since the summer, completing voluntary practices and conditioning work with the squad.
Oklahoma opens the season Jan. 8 at home against Florida, a Super Six qualifier at last year's NCAA Championships.
