NORMAN, Okla. - Nine Oklahoma women's gymnasts earned National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches All-Academic Scholar Athlete Awards, the NACGC announced Wednesday.
The total almost doubles the amount of honors from the previous two seasons, as five OU gymnasts garnered the accolade in both 2008 and 2007.
With nine gymnasts honored, OU's total was third-best among teams advancing to last year's NCAA Championship, behind only Alabama (13) and Stanford (10).
OU recorded a team GPA of 3.36, up more than 0.1 of a point over last year's 3.25, marking the highest cumulative team GPA for the squad since 2004. The 3.36 GPA for the Sooners was 24th in the country, also marking the squad's highest finish under head coach K.J. Kindler.
"We have always placed an emphasis on academic achievement in our program and these nine women have gone above and beyond what we have asked of them," said head coach K.J. Kindler. "This group includes two that will be starting medical school in the fall, along with one that is starting her second year towards her master's degree. 2009 proved to be a special year both in the classroom and in the competition arena, but we are always striving to improve in both facets as we move forward."
Garnering the award for the fourth-straight year were Haley Horton (DeProspero) - 3.75 (zoology/biomedical sciences) and Gina Lesko - 3.75 (zoology/biomedical sciences). Both have been accepted into their respective medical schools and will begin in the fall.
For the second straight year, Jessica Kinder - 3.8 (adult and higher education) and Mary Mantle - 3.5 (human relations) earned the honor, while Candace Cindell - 3.54 (journalism), Megan Ferguson - 3.52 (journalism), Jackie Flanery - 3.56 (human relations), Natalie Ratcliff - 3.79 (early childhood education) and Sara Stone - 3.57 (undecided) rounded out OU's accolades.
To qualify for NACGC All-American Scholar Athlete honors, gymnasts must attain a GPA of 3.5 or better.
