Beal and McCoy on Nagurski List

NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma's Jeremy Beal and Gerald McCoy are on the preseason watch list for the Bronko Nagurski Award. The honor is presented annually to college football's top defensive player.

It is selected by the Football Writers Association of America and presented by the Charlotte (NC) Touchdown Club.

Beal, a junior defensive end from Carrollton, Texas, started all 14 games for OU last season when he logged 61 tackles, including 15.5 for loss and 8.5 sacks.

McCoy, a senior defensive tackle from Oklahoma City, also started 14 games last season with 30 tackles, 11 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks.

Six Football Writers Association of America All-Americans are among 62 players selected to the 2009 Bronko Nagurski Watch List, announced today by the FWAA and the Charlotte Touchdown Club. Included on the list are two past finalists for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, TCU end Jerry Hughes and South Florida end George Selvie.

The Bronko Nagurski Trophy has been presented since 1993 and is awarded in memory of the legendary Nagurski, an All-America lineman at Minnesota in 1927-29 and a star for professional football's Chicago Bears in the 1930s.

Past winners from Oklahoma include Roy Williams in 2001 and Derrick Strait in 2003.
