EUGENE, Ore. — Oklahoma freshman Will Claye earned a spot on the U.S. Junior National Team with his second-place finish in the long jump Saturday at the U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore. The first-year Sooner was one of two to finish in the top three as Alex Madkins took third in the event.
Claye's jump of 25-7.25 (7.80) was the second best behind gold medalist Marquise Goodwin's 26-1.50 (7.96). With the second-place finish, Claye is now eligible to represent the United States in the Pan American Junior Championships, July 31-Aug. 2nd. Madkins leapt a personal-best distance of 25-2.50 (7.68), to earn a tie at ninth on the OU performance list.
Leslie Cole advanced to the semifinals of the 200-meter dash in the women's senior division with a time of 23.19 in the event's first round. Scottesha Miller, also competing in the event, narrowly missed advancing with a time of 23.45. Adidas' Allyson Felix led all competitors with a time of 22.58.
Ross Larimar grabbed the final spot in the final of the men's junior 1,500-meter run with a personal best time of 3:54.98. Blake Shaw recorded the top qualifying time of 3:50.75 for the finals scheduled for Sunday at 3:15 p.m. PST.
Sunday action for Oklahoma athletes at the event begins at 12:30 p.m. PST with Cole in the semifinals of the 200-meter dash.
