NORMAN, Okla. -- After 50 rounds and 1,521 selections, the 2009 MLB Draft concluded on Thursday. The three-day event saw nine Sooners from the 2009 roster get drafted and five of signees from the 2010 class.

The nine current players selected led the Big 12 Conference. Since 1967, the largest number of selections is 10 by an OU team, set in 1998 and 1985.

Garrett Richards began the draft for Oklahoma as the first Sooner taken on Tuesday, which featured the first three rounds.  Richards is the third first round draft pick at OU since 2004 and the second in the last three years.

Andrew Doyle (4th round), J.T. Wise (5th round), Jamie Johnson (7th round), Chase Anderson and Bryant Hernandez (9th round), Aaron Baker (11th round), Antwonie Hubbard  and Matt Harughty (26th round) were all selected on day two.

Among the signees, Austin Kirk (Owasso, Okla.) was taken in the third round by the Dodgers, Chad Kettler (Coppell, Texas) in the 24th round by the Cubs, Bobby Shore (San Marcos, Calif.) in the 40th round by the Orioles, Danny Black (Roseville, Calif.) in the 42nd round by the Yankees and Ryan Gibson (Yukon, Okla.) in the 48th round by the Marlins.

Shore, Black and Gibson were all drafted on the final day.  Click here to learn more about the 2010 class.

"I am extremely proud and excited about the direction of the Sooner baseball program as we continue to develop players and compete at a high level," said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway.

"It is truly amazing to see how far along these young men have progressed in their time at OU.  While we may lose several players, the coaches are proud of them for how they represent the University of Oklahoma baseball program.  We will not panic about replacing them because one of the missions of this program is to develop players that dream of playing at the next level. And we will continue to recruit the best players and prepare them for professional baseball."

Among the nine players selected during the first two days, three Sooners came to Norman undrafted in their careers, including first round selection Garrett Richards.

"We are really proud of all of the guys, but especially Garrett, Bryant and Matt, who all truly developed in their time at OU after going undrafted out of high school or junior college," said Golloway.  "While we have only enjoyed our new hitting facility and practice field for less than a year, it is safe to say that those improvements at L. Dale Mitchell Park assisted in their development.

"Even before the new additions, our program has produced top notch talent and now, we are able to offer student athletes the very best player development facilities in the country.  We are proud to say that we have produced several players that have made it to the next level and will continue to do so while we compete for championships at OU."

Below is a look at some of the different achievements in this year's draft and over the last five years under Coach Golloway.

BY THE NUMBERS
1
- Garrett Richards is selected in the first round.  OU has three first round draft picks in the last six years, including two in the last three years in Richards and Jackson Williams (2007).  Both Richards and Williams were undrafted out of high school and Oklahoma natives.

2 - OU was one of two Big 12 schools to produce at least three picks in the first six rounds (top 200 picks).  The Sooners had three selected in that span, tied with Baylor.  Only seven other programs across the country accomplished the same feat (North Carolina-5, LSU-4, Miami-4, Arizona State-3, Cal-3, Indiana-3 and USC-3).

3 - OU has three players drafted in the first five rounds with Richards, Andrew Doyle (fourth round) and J.T. Wise (fifth round).  The last time Oklahoma had three draftees in the first five rounds was in 1985 when Bobby Witt (first round), David Johnson (second round) and Steve Peters (fifth round) were selected.  Since 1967, three or more Sooners have been picked in the first five rounds on four occasions.

7 - Andrew Doyle was the seventh player drafted out of the Big 12 Conference, giving OU two out of the first seven from the league with Richards being selected third.

9 - The number of players drafted in 2009, the most in the Big 12.  The total is also tied for second all-time at OU.  Only two clubs, the 1998 and 1995 Sooners, have produced more draft picks in a single season (10).

10 - For just the third time in program history, six players were taken in the first 10 rounds, a first since 1976 (seven).  The 2009 total ties the second most in program history with the 1975 squad.

13 - The number of players selected in the last five years under head coach Sunny Golloway that were undrafted when they arrived on campus.  Five of those players turned into top 10 round picks, including two first rounders in Jackson Williams and Garrett Richards.

25 - The number of players that improved their draft status after their playing time at OU since 2005.

29 - Number of players drafted under Sunny Golloway in his five years as head coach at OU.  That includes two first round picks, five players selected in the first five rounds and 11 draftees in the first 10 rounds.
