OKLAHOMA CITY -- No. 8 Oklahoma (41-17) mounted a rally in the ninth inning with five runs, but was unable to overcome a seven-run deficit and fell 17-15 to No. 22 Texas A&M (35-22) in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship.
The Sooners built a 10-7 leave after four innings of action, but Texas A&M scored 10 unanswered runs until OU posted five in the final frame. The game lasted three hours and 59 minutes in front of 7,416 fans at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark.
“It was a tough night for the Sooners,” said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. “Our guys did a good job coming out opening and did a good job closing. The game was really the bullpen. Their bullpen stabilized and ours didn't.”
Jeremy Erben (0-1) took the loss after giving up the lead in the sixth inning. For Texas A&M, Alex Wilson (6-6) pitched five innings of relief and allowed two earned runs off four hits for the win. Travis Starling earned the save after Nick Fleece gave up five runs in the ninth. Down 17-15, with runners on first and third and one out, Starling induced the game-ending double play.
“That is the Big 12 for you,” said junior shortstop Bryant Hernandez. “Every game is a dogfight, and you never know what is going to happen. We told the team that the game is not over and Coach kept emphasizing that. We know that every weekend when we come out and play that anything can happen.”
OU opened the game with six runs in the top of the first inning off Brooks Raley, but the Aggies countered with five runs in the bottom half of the frame. The first inning saw 19 batters come to the plate and 46 minutes pass by.
The Sooners' starter Michael Rocha did not get out of the first inning and his counterpart, Raley, lasted just one frame. OU sent five relievers to the mound after Rocha and only Antwonie Hubbard, helped keep the game close with two innings and one earned run allowed off one hit.
The Sooners started the scoring in the first with J.T. Wise's two-run double to the gap in right center. After an infield single by Aaron Baker, Garrett Buechele and Casey Johnson connected for RBI singles before Trey Sperring capped off the scoring with a two-run shot to left field. The homer marked Sperring's second this season in just 17 at-bats.
In the top of the second, OU tacked on two more runs, one off Bryant Hernandez's single, good for his 60th RBI of the year, and the second on Aaron Baker's single to right field.
Texas A&M cut Oklahoma's 8-5 down to one run with a single run in the bottom of the second and another in the third.
Wise ripped his third double of the game in the fourth inning to score two more OU runs. The Big 12 Championship single game record by Wise increased the Sooners' advantage to 10-7.
The Sooners will play Missouri in the final game of pool play on Saturday at 4 p.m. OU needs a win, coupled with a Texas Tech win over Texas A&M, in order to advance to Sunday's championship game at 1 p.m. Every team in the Sooners' pool is 1-1 after Friday's action.
“I told our club we need each other more than ever this time in the year. We are not a club that's ever pointed fingers, and our guys have great character. We will just regroup tonight and get ready for the quick turnaround.
“Two years in a row we have been 2-0 going into our third game and we haven't gotten into the championship yet. God willing 1-1, if we come out and take care of business, we still have an opportunity.”
