WICHITA, Kan. -- The No. 11 University of Oklahoma baseball team (26-7) was firing on all cylinders Wednesday night at Wichita State (18-12) during a 15-0 victory.
Despite another offensive explosion by the Sooners, the pitching staff was the headliner, as Garrett Richards (4-1) led the way with seven of the team's season-high 16 strikeouts.
For the Sooners, Richards (four innings) combined with Jeremy Erben (two innings), J.R. Robinson (one inning), Michael Rocha (one inning) and Jarrett Semler (one inning) for 16 strikeouts. The staff retired the side in order on five occasions and limited WSU to a season-low three hits in the shutout.
Jaime Johnson (3-for-4, four runs, RBI) and J.T. Wise (3-for-4, run, two RBIs) led the offensive that connected for 14 hits.
“Tonight was a complete victory,” said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. “We played well in all three facets of the game and thought our pitching staff was very strong, especially Garrett Richards' performance.”
After three scoreless innings, Richards and company received all of the run support it needed.
The Sooners started the scoring in the top of the fourth with a trio of two-out runs. Aaron Baker broke up Brian Flynn's no-hitter and laced a double into right-center field to plate Jaime Johnson from third base. Johnson was the Sooners' first base runner of the game and moved to second on Matt Harughty's sacrifice bunt and later to third on his team-leading 11th stolen base. Baker quickly came home as J.T. Wise cleared the fence in left field for his team-high 11th home run of the year. Wise entered Wednesday's contest ranked second in the Big 12 in homers.
Oklahoma scored three more runs in the fifth and benefitted again from a leadoff walk issued by Flynn. The Sooners' manufactured the first run of the frame as Garrett Buechele received the free pass and moved to second on Tyler Ogle's sacrifice bunt. Kaleb Herren plated Buechele on a double to left field and quickly scored as Jaime Johnson tripled to center field. Harughty drove in the third and final run of the fifth inning on a ground out to short.
Richards also had a no-hitter through three innings and was impressive in his sixth start of the year. The hurler tied a career high with seven strikeouts in the predetermined start and allowed one hit and two walks in four innings of work. On the other side, Flynn dropped to 1-2 after surrendering six runs off five hits and two walks in 5 1/3 innings.
In the top of the seventh, Baker put the game out of reach with his ninth home run of the season, a three-run shot to right field that extended the Sooners' lead to 10-0. Earlier in the frame, Chris Ellison scored on a wild pitch. Casey Johnson kept the scoring going in the seventh with a RBI triple and Buechele extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a run-scoring double that gave OU a 12-0 lead.
The Sooners return home to host Texas Tech over the weekend for a three-game Big 12 series. Friday's series opener is slated for a 6:35 p.m. first pitch. Saturday's game will begin at 4 p.m. and the series concludes on Sunday at 1 p.m.
