Women's Golf Opens in Rockies

OU Shares Fifth at Big 12 Tourney

NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma women's golf team fired a first-round 315 (+23) Friday and is tied for fifth place at the Big 12 Championship in Lubbock, Texas.  OU and Nebraska are three strokes behind fourth-place Kansas and four strokes behind third-place Kansas State at the 6,564-yard, par-73 Rawls Course.
 
Oklahoma State, ranked No. 4 nationally, paces the tournament after firing a 3-over-par 295.  The Cowgirls are followed by Texas A&M (+12), Kansas State (+19), Kansas (+20), Oklahoma, Nebraska, Missouri (+25), Colorado (+25), Texas (+29), Baylor (+29), Iowa State (+33) and Texas Tech (+34).
 
Caroline Hedwall of Oklahoma State shot a 3-under 70 to lead all golfers.  Morgan Moon of Kansas State and Ashley Freeman of Texas A&M stand in a second-place tie after each carded a 72.
 
Senior Kendall Dye fired a 76 (+3) to lead the Sooners.  Dye, who owns the second-best stroke average in OU history, is tied for eighth place with Colorado's Emily Talley and Texas A&M's Alexa Porter.  She played in the back nine in 1-under-par fashion. 
 
One stroke behind Dye is OU senior Staci Smoot, who entered the tournament in the team's No. 5 spot.  Smoot recorded three birdies on the day and is tied for 11th place with her first-round 77 (+4).
 
Sophomore Ellen Mueller shot an 80 (+7) and is tied for 28th in the field of 60.  She shot even par on the back nine. 
 
Freshman Kelly Short carded an 82 (+9) en route to a 39th-place standing while sophomore Sara Hemingway turned in an 87 (+14) and is in 59th place.
 
Saturday's second round will begin at 8 a.m. CT.
