NORMAN, Okla. -- Aaron Baker drove in a career-high five RBIs and hit two of Oklahoma's seven home runs on Monday, as the No. 10 Sooners posted a 16-6 victory in eight innings over Nebraska en route to a 2-1 series win.
The Sooners won their first conference series against Nebraska since 2006 (in Lincoln). In addition, Nebraska (16-10-1, 4-5) entered this weekend having won each of the last five series in Norman.
“Our guys did a great job of coming out today after a really disappointing loss in game two yesterday,” said OU Head Coach Sunny Golloway. “We felt like we let one get away and it was important to come out strong today. In baseball, you are not going to win every game, this sport is about winning series. So far, our guys have done a good job of that.”
OU (23-6 overall, 4-2 in Big 12) has won each of its first two conference series this season thanks to the long ball. The Sooners have 27 homers in Big 12 play, a mark that has already exceeded the totals from each of the last six seasons in conference action.
“It's nice to know we have power and that we can rely on it (hitting homers) sometimes,” said Golloway. “But we want to be a fundamentally sound team that can manufacture runs.”
Behind 16 runs off 15 hits, OU starter J.R. Robinson improved to 3-1 after throwing a season-high 6 1/3 innings. Robinson pitched out of the bullpen during Sunday's doubleheader and was effective in the start during the series finale with five strikeouts, also a career high.
“He was nothing short of terrific today,” added Golloway. “He made them hit his pitch and did a good job of getting ahead in the count. That was a clutch performance.”
For the third consecutive game in the series, the Sooners jumped on top for an early lead in the first inning. Bryant Hernandez started things off with a two-out triple to center field and extended his hitting streak to 11 games, tying a career high. During the streak, Hernandez has collected seven multi-hit games and six multi-RBI performances.
Hernandez quickly came home in the first as Baker drove his sixth home run of the season over the batter's eye in center field. Later in the frame, Garrett Buechele extended his hitting streak to a career best nine games and gave OU a 3-0 lead with a RBI single.
Nebraska cut the lead down to two runs in the second inning, but the Sooners tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the third. Baker struck again in his second at-bat with another two-run shot, this time to left field. Buechele provided the other score in the frame, hitting his third home run of the season to give OU a 6-1 lead.
In the fourth, the Huskers got another run off Robinson, but once again, the Sooners came right back in the bottom of the frame with another big inning. OU scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth, marking the 13th time this season it has scored five or more in a frame. Matt Harughty and Hernandez began the scoring with back-to-back home runs and Casey Johnson added a three-run bomb to right field later in the frame.
J.T. Wise capped Monday's home run parade with his team-leading 10th dinger of the season in the bottom of the fifth. Nebraska made things interesting with four runs late in the game but was unable to overcome the five runs allowed by Sean Yost (1-2) during his start that lasted 2 1/3 innings.
The Sooners resume action this weekend for a three-game series at Missouri. The set begins on Friday, April 3 at 6:30 p.m.
